So the first secret I found said to type a word on the character select screen. Trouble is, there is no way on Android to force the keyboard to open, so there's no way to type anything on the character select screen at all.

Perhaps a text box you could open to type these cheats into would be a good addition to the UI?

unlikely I will add an entire text input for an easter egg. you can try using a Bluetooth/USB keyboard.
