Seeking Your Thoughts on a Giveaway Idea for My Game

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re all doing well! I wanted to reach out to the community to gather your perspectives on an idea I’ve been considering to promote my game.

In my latest update, I introduced a global leaderboard showcasing the top five players who have the most games played. To encourage more participation, I’m thinking about hosting a giveaway for a £10-£20 gift card for the player who ranks first on the leaderboard after a certain amount of time.

Do you think this initiative could benefit the game in terms of encouraging regular play and keeping players engaged with future updates? Or do you feel it might only boost popularity temporarily during the giveaway, with interest fading once it’s over?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks!

This would completely kill my interest in the game.  I'm not interested in winning the £20 because that's less than minimum wage for the amount of time I would have to invest, and I'm not interested in losing because losing sucks, so not participating is the only option left.  Also, I would be disturbed that you are tracking the amount of time I spend in the game.

That does make sense, the game isn't tracking anything to do with any player, it just keeps a score of how many time you correctly find the ghost.

Thinking about it some more, if you really want to do this kind of giveaway, then you should structure it as a raffle where everybody gets a chance to win, not just the guy at the top of the leaderboard.  Maybe each time somebody finds a ghost, they get a small random chance to win money.  That way players don't have to choose between investing ridiculous amounts of time to go for a win and giving up entirely.  Each player can increase their chance of a win, no matter how far behind they are.

Just be careful that you don't break any gambling laws.

I think you'd have as much trouble advertising the giveaway as you would advertising the game. If people aren't finding your game, they won't find out about the giveaway either.

But I'd rather not encourage developers to compensate players for trying their games - the money should flow the other way round!
