Require people to buy your game before they can review it.

Its really weird that people can review your paid product on here despite not owning it. It shouldn't be possible for a brand new game to have 0 downloads, 0 sales, and multiple 1 star reviews.

+100

I would also suggest placing a widget with stars (rate) directly on the game page, since new users may not know that such an option exists since it is "hidden" behind the button.

The rate button is on the game page. Do you not see it maybe? The page changes layout depending on screen size.

I know about that button, but it not "jump to the eyes". For the first time when I have wanted to make the vote I had spent some time to find it. The widget placed right in the main content wold be more helpful (my oppinion).

multiple 1 star

You might want to contact Itch support, if you suspect harrassment.

Other than that, this is not unusual: being able to rate things that you did not buy. On platforms with public reviews you usually see something like a verified purchase or something, but the unverified reviews still exist there.

On Itch specifically, you can buy without having an account. In generall, you could know the game from some place else. But a new game and multiple 1 stars sounds odd.

I agree with you. But would be better to see the special marks like "Rating: 3.7 from viewers, 4.2 from buyers". It will much helpful for all, as I think.

Many people complain about reviews not being attached to the games. They would like to see their reviews.

I can imagine several reasons why this is not so on Itch. But if they were public, they should also have this verified purchase icon.

But for pay-what-you-want games, I doubt that it would be usefull to have your proposed differenciation between ratings of customers and other ratings. There is bound to be heavy bias.

To be honest, having ratings at all is a big deal alreay. Most people do not rate the games they play. Only if they care. And this happens usually if they like it very much or are disturbed or angry about something.

So for few ratings the bias would be even bigger and for many ratings it does not matter, because it evens out.

I already reported the reviews in question nearly a month ago when I made this post, but Itch staff never removed the multiple 1 star reviews from people who had no way of  having played the game.

Had to result to just turning off reviews due to harassment Itch won't do anything about, as the game had 0 downloads and several 1 star reviews.

The solution other companies implemented was to not allow a rating without a written review. At least then you know what issue the 1-star people had with the game - if any.

I've also turned off my reviews - but now I can't participate in any of Itch.io bundles because they go solely on who has the most reviews. It's a catch-22.

(1 edit)

The irony there is at least one of my games reviews had a very hateful message from someone who did not buy or download my game, and itch will not remove it. Its been there for a month now.

You are so full of shit, leaving one star reviews on other games that I KNOW you haven't purchased while you hide your fascist drivel from being review bombed into the ground like it deserves. Cowardly behavior, just like your fuhrer.

(+1)

Your demeanour is rude and your assumptions incorrect. Please try to be better in the future.

I've reported your hateful message and am blocking you as I've no time for hate in my life.

Without public reviews that would not work.

And I do not understand that with the participation in bundles. What's that got to with ratings? Itch does not create bundles. Users do.

For a catch22 you would have to need to be in a bundle to get ratings and could only have the game in a bundle, if it has ratings. Neither is the case to my knowledge.

I'm referring to the itch.io select bundles. Where staff from itch.io put together a bundle of 10 or 20 items from different developers and share the proceeds among the developers. The last time they did that, they specifically stated they would select games based on their ratings.

The catch is: when we enable ratings, we get low ratings from people who (probably didn't play the game) but felt the need to give it a 1-star rating - so our games won't be picked. If we disable ratings: our games won't be picked.

I am not aware that there are any bundles created by Itch. Was that a thing they did in the past? Can you link to a current bundle? There is winter sale. If such bundles still exist, there should be one right now.

Actually I am not aware of any promotions Itch does, at all, beside the featured and fresh lists on the homepage. And maybe "picks" of bundles. I misread. Those are just featured lists of sales, not lists of bundles. Anyway. Even with coop bundles, there is always "A bundle hosted by" and that by is not Itch, but a developer.

Sorry, but the longer I think about what you wrote, the less sense this makes.

You can create your own bundles. You can coop create bundles. Ratings have nothing to do with this. Only if you have no payments on those items is a reason for a game not to be on a bundle.

And if you create a bundle, the invited devs need to aprove and according to faq they do not even get a message, to prevent spamming.

https://itch.io/docs/creators/bundles

To host a bundle, you would need to be a developer selling a game here. Itch does not sell Itch's games. https://itch.itch.io/ does not exist as a user to host bundles.

(You need to be part of the bundle to host a bundle. So either you misunderstood something or that was something special that I never ever heard of)

If you don't understand what I'm talking about - why don't you just ignore my post?

It was an itch.io select bundle from several months, if not years ago. The thread is no longer there. There used to be a banner on my game that I had submitted it (it wasn't picked) and I deleted the submission to make the banner go away.

This was the only example of a itch.io select bundle I could currently find.

https://itch.io/t/2794600/submit-your-games-for-an-upcoming-itchio-selects-bundl...

Well, I have never seen any Itch Selects bundle nor heard about the concept. Sorry for being flabberhasted about this and asking about things I do not know.

Thank you for the link. I also never ever saw anyone from staff doing a posting in community, except leafo.

I hope your haters got bored and you can have ratings open in peace. Downrating is kinda lame. One should rate what one likes, to get better recommendations. If you downrate games about x, you might get recommendations about other games with topic x - but in truth you did dislike all x.

Since this topic was revived anyway, y'all realize that:

  1. some games don't have to be bought, since the minimum price is zero
  2. some games can't be bought, because their creators can't take payments
  3. even if someone bought / downloaded a game, doesn't mean they've played it
  4. even if they did play the game, doesn't mean they're writing a review in good faith

Basically: how exactly do you propose to, what, magically make people nice?

Please remember than the occasional one-star review has no effect on your game's visibility or anything.

(+2)

Personally, my proposal is only for paid games, you should have to buy the game before you're able to review it. That is more or less how it works on Steam.

If a person buys your game and still gives it a negative review, fine, you at least made a sale off them.

This change alone would help prevent review bomb harassment by random people for paid products.

(+1)

Now itch just allow to enable/disable ratings and reviews. Would be better to add some additional options like:

  • Disable ratings and reviews
  • Allow ratins and reviews from buyers
  • Allow ratins and reviews from all

As for me, I always look at the rating before buying any product. If I see a low rating, I will think twice before sending money. Yes, a low rating does not affect the visibility of the game, but I am sure it greatly affects the number of sales.

Counterpoint: I want to be able to support games I like by giving them a positive review, even if I purchased them on GOG instead of itch.

If you want to support the game, just send some donation ;-)
