I've been away from the project for a while, and apparently the version I still have installed is... 0.40.3. So, almost 9 months ago. (ouch) Is it possible to transfer over saves from there to 0.49.x directly, or should I load them up through an intermediary version first to avoid issues?

Generally speaking the game is backwards compatible up to version 0.4.0 if I recall correctly. There is no point in using intermediate versions.

That being said, there are a lot of data corruption bugs that the game's the migration mechanism doesn't fix during migration, mostly because of risk for breaking correct data. So provided your save doesn't have any data corruption from a bug, you should be able to just copy&paste your save/ folder into a newer version and continue playing without issues.

Great! I'll try it out then and hopefully there's no hidden corruption anywhere. If so... eh, I guess starting over won't be too bad, given how long it's been anyway.
