Resolution issues

Hi

I downloaded GOF 2.5 and worked out the shortcut but I can't adjust the resolution on the game so that it fits in screen. I'm running at 1920 x 1080 and it's still not working quite right. Never had this problem before. I'm using DirectX 9 64.

Thanks for your help

Tyscabuzz

If you run Config GOF 2.5 and select 800x600, Save, then launch GOF 2.5, do you get a small screen?  Then if you run Config again, select 1920x1080, Save, Launch game, is it bigger?  And if so, is it not fitting your entire window?  Is that what you're describing?

Even with city of ships I can't see the whole screen  - I think I need more step by step help on how to configure the resolution. Sorry

I tried the whole thing on another PC and in every single resolution got the same problem so I'm assuming it's something I'm doing wrong. I've tried everything I can think of but now I'm stuck. Is the following correct? Hope you can help

Below is typical. It looks ok but there's extra options missing at the bottom due to resolution issues 'Goods on ship' etc.

Judging from the paths, it looks like you are not using the Itch client; the Itch client will automatically "install" the game in directory names that match the "project" and your paths don't match.  Example: If you use the Itch client to install Maelstrom in C:\Maelstrom, you would see a C:\Maelstrom\gentlemen-of-fortune-maelstrom-engine directory that will contain the DirectX9_64bit directory. So it looks like you downloaded with a browser or something and extracted a .zip file?  If so, keep in mind that you won't get automatic updates and will always need to check for updates and download the entire thing, every update; the Itch client will update only what has changed and will not download the whole thing.

In any case, to run Config.exe for the resolution, you can copy that same shortcut that you show.  Copy and past the shortcut, then modify the shortcut name to Config COAS.  Edit the properties by changing the Target by replacing Maelstrom.exe with Config.exe, add a space, then copy/paste the Start In to the end (with the double quotes):  C:\Maelstrom\DirectX9_64bit\Config.exe "C:\Maelstrom\Games\GOF City of ships"

Remove the Start In value, or replace with Start In: C:\Maelstrom\DirectX9_64bit  Either way should work.

Quick summary:

Target: C:\Maelstrom\DirectX9_64bit\Config.exe "C:\Maelstrom\Games\GOF City of ships"

Start In: C:\Maelstrom\DirectX9_64bit

Launch the shortcut, change the resolution, Save and launch game.  If you want to config a different game, like GOF or ERAS, you will need a different shortcut, to the same Config.exe, but change the trailing "C:\Maelstrom\Games\GOF City of ships" to the path of the other "mod."

I don't think the client will recognize it because it will put the files in the pre-named directories based on my project name in Itch, even when you choose C:\Maelstrom, it will make a new directory for the engine/modules and will also do the same for the various mods when you install those in C:\Maelstrom\games.

Thanks. I understand. So having bought the Maelstrom engine, how can I import it into the client?

What is your status so far?  Do you have the game updated from the Itch client and able to launch?

Hi there  just been on holiday so will attempt to reload. I've downloaded the engine and HIstorial Eras (as that looks by far the best) and will give it a go. Will let you know how I get on

Hi, I got it to work. Great job and thanks for your help and patience. I'll have a play and get a feel for it.

Rename your C:\Maelstrom directory to C:\MaelstromOld.  Make a new directory C:\Maelstrom, then add a new directory C:\Maelstrom\games.  Open the Itch client, log in with your credentials used to purchase the engine.  At the top of the client screen, paste the URL to the game:  https://chezjfrey.itch.io/gentlemen-of-fortune-maelstrom-engine

There should be a button at the bottom to "Install".  Select your new C:\Maelstrom directory for installation.  Then do the same for City of Ships, but install to C:\Maelstrom\games.  When the installations are done, you should see two new directories for C:\Maelstrom\gentlemen-of-fortune-maelstrom-engine and C:\Maelstrom\games\gentlemen-of-fortune-lost-ships-city.  The shortcuts you get default to 32 bit and we can change to 64 bit, but lets get the automatic update and the config setup working for you first with just these steps.

Sorry for not being clear. I've struggled to work out how to load this. So there is an application 'Config' in the Direct x folder. But it won't open  error 'start.ini'

Below is the 800x600

GOF City of ships does work however and the resolution is fine.

Also in both,  are there only 3 characters to choose from? Peter Blood, Diego and Ian Stance?

Thanks for your help

Yes, City of Ships is a replica of the original City of Abandoned Ships game and only has the 3 characters.  Whoever made the GOF 2.5 mod for COAS did not add characters.  GOF 1.2 and ERAS II have more; ERAS II has almost 150 different characters for the player to choose.
