Do you mean building walls/foundations etc.? You need a Building Hammer to build such things, you can't just craft them in the crafting menu. Hopefully I helped you :)
To get to the build menu you have to hold right-click while you have the hammer in equipped in your hand. Then move your towards the direction of what you want to build and stop holding right-click.
This is going to sound stupid but when i go to build menu and then try to place the thing that i want it doesn't let me it just goes to build menu again
