Pixel art strategy game : the game

That's not going to be the title of course, or maybe it will.

I started a project about a strategy game the day before, and I feel like I have some things to show already.

First look :

Here is a first look at the artstyle of the game. The grass must be reworked of course, but the knights should keep that look. All the sprite use tilemaps for the lighting.

(Idle animation, looks kinda weird because of the gif export apparently)

Game Concept and core mechanics :

The game will start with you owning a single unit, you (the general). You will go around the board to "recruit" warriors. I say "recruit", because the units you will interact with are of the same country, same blood, your friends almost (kinda). You just have to tell them that you are here, that you are the big boss and that they must follow your orders. For example : farmers are there farming, as they usually do, you arrive and tell them to stop farming and fight to the death. Or maybe you could tell them to keep farming, your army needs food afterall, but at least they will listen to you.

The idea I have behind this game is a unique (I think) turn mechanic : as a player, you will decide two moves that any of your units will make, before ending the turn. Both moves you ordered, as well as the 2 moves your enemy ordered will then play simultaneously. I will figure how this mechanic plays out as I implement it, but as this is supposed to be a strategy game, it might need a lot of trial and error.

The numbers for health or damage will be very small, inspired by the game Into the Breach. I am aiming at making a replayable game without making it too hard. I was thinking about some sort of campaign, where food and/or gold would be required to keep up your little army. People who follow you would be warriors of course, not locals.

What has been done so far :

For now, I have already made a rather big chunk of the tile script, as well as basic unit movement :

All units will be able to move only one tile at a time. However, some units will play around that mechanic. For example, a horseman will move also move 1 tile, but if there is an enemy on the second tile, the enemy will take big damage as if the horseman had charged.

Also, a variation of the enemy knight, which I made for fun but might very well have its place in the game.

I have made the grid rather easily modifiable, so there will be varied levels, like farm lands, battles accross rivers,...

The pixel art is looking good!

Send the word when you need a playtester. :)

Thank you :)

Hey! I'm a musician and I really like  the style of your game, do you need some music for the game or have you already got a music composer? I could make it for free. Thank you for your time reading this ^^

Hey ! Thank you for the offer, you seem cool.

Sadly, I have moved on from this project, I prototyped multiple versions that I didnt think were fun.

However, I make games pretty regularly, so we can maybe one day work on another project, a game jam or something. If you use twitter, the link is on my creator page.

I don't have twitter :/ but here's my discord:Nelt.#0843
