Mac Bug: Gutwhale Quit Unexpectedly

Hi! I'm really excited about this game, and I read the disclaimer about it not running reliably on Macs yet so hard hard feeling :)

When I try to launch the game I get the error: "gutwhale quit unexpectedly'. For additional info, I'm running Mac High Sierra 10.13.6. Lemme know if there's any else I can do to help! Looking forward to playing it!!!

To provide some additional data from the Mac side, I downloaded the game and am unable to run it at all, getting an error saying "The application "Gutwhale" can't be opened". This is on Mac Catalina 10.15.2.

I will probably end up playing on my Windows machine, but I also would be happy to help test any future Mac builds!

FYI This sounds a bit like the 'standard error' that you get with a lot of non-app store programs on Mac nowadays. It's usually solved by moving the app from the folder you downloaded it to — e.g. move it to Applications — and then running again. Also, due to permissions/security, you might need to open it via right-click (menu), then "Open".

If you do all of that, you might then be faced with the "quit unexpectedly" message ... or you might get lucky :)

A better fix is to do chmod +x and drag the file you find when you hit open package and navigate to inside the MacOS folder it should have a sheet of paper as its icon but even then its broken on mac as it instantly crashes

Heyo!

Ah damm im very sorry crawlspace! Is it possible for you to refund the game?
If we never ever get the Mac version running (which i highly doubt) I can send you the game as a hmtl5 file you can run through any browser!

We are getting some reports from people with different Operating system right now, and I will look into all the issues, but i would say that the earliest time that can be resolved is tomorrow!

EDIT: ok i misunderstood your post, I thought u had not read the disclaimer and accidentally bought it :)

thanks for understanding!
Cheers,

josh

Hi, Just purchased for mac and still doesnt work, could i have the html5 file please.

cheers

As so many people are buying the game (in the bundle) if you could put the HTML file in the downloads it would be great although I understand if theres some issue with doing that

Developer

yeah i have been considering that!

but it feels pretty dangerous? because while the games has been allegedly cracked and can be pirated, a html build could be easily uploaded to the internet in a very accessible way that would be unfair to all the work we did on the game?

ill keep thinking about it ^^

Thats kind of what I was expecting I don't know much about DRM but I expect that would make it much easier to pirate. If the game never gets a working Mac version that is fine just know those of us with mac would appreciate it. Fortunately thats why I dual boot.

Hey!

Definitely not looking for a refund. I'm sure stuff is crazy right now with lots of bug reports and fixes around launch, I'm just happy to wait for whenever the Mac version is (more) ready :))

hey thanks for understanding!

I posted a roadmap on the steampage of Gutwhale, where I show in what order I will work on stuff:

Im expecting to get to Linux & Mac issues this weekend at the latest :)

Hi...  curious if any development on the Mac version is planned.  (Won't, alas, open on a MacBook running Catalina 10.15.5. "The application “Gutwhale” can’t be opened.") Thanks for your time.

Developer

heyo!

I have hit some personal snags and am not planning to get back to the mac version soon!

If you bought the game, I can send you a html5 version, which you can run through your browser!

cheer,

josh

Yup, I purchased it through itch.io RJ&E bundle.  If you could send the HTML5 version that'd be great.  My e-mail is lookmark at earthlink.net.  Thanks

Developer

done!

yo yo... same exact boat over here. if the game can't run on my Mac could you send me the HTML5 version? TY

Developer

sure!

hit me up at thestuffedwombat at gmail.com :))

There's a problem with the symlinks in the Mac App bundle. Instead of proper symlinks, these are plain files containing the symlink target as text. Apparently, this can occur when creating the App bundle on Windows. See this issue for more information: https://github.com/nwjs/nw.js/issues/6606
I was able to create a working App bundle by pasting the Resources folder into this nwjs App bundle downloaded here: https://dl.nwjs.io/v0.46.2/nwjs-v0.46.2-osx-x64.zip. For some reason the game is running slow in fullscreen mode, but other that that it seems to be working well.

Developer

huh thats awesome to know!

thanks :)

I actualy think I just came across why this is and how to fix it https://github.com/golang/go/issues/24057 this issue gives some information on the distinction between TAR and ZIP but to summarise it seems that ZIP support for symlinks is weak and TAR handles them by default I recommend you just switch over to storing the app in TAR and seeing if it helps

this might also help but you likely already read it https://itch.io/docs/itch/integrating/compatibility-policy.html

Best of luck :)
