Would like to be able to set it so the game doesn't auto minimise when the screen is not the primary focus.

Are you playing on fullscreen? It seems to me that the game plays in the background without minimizing when you play in window mode and alt-tab to something else. You can disable fullscreen in options -> graphics -> fullscreen.
