In recent times, I have honed in on a specific game design theme – what it calls 'design challenges.' These challenges revolve around pertinent real-world issues that are both captivating and controversial. Among the various themes, I have chosen to delve into the world of social media.
My research focus centers on the interplay between social media and individuals, with a particular interest in whether recommendation algorithms on these platforms amplify cognitive dilemmas. This theme did not emerge overnight; it has evolved over the past decade alongside the rise of recommendation algorithms, giving rise to concepts like filter bubbles, echo chambers, and internet Balkanization. These concepts all reflect concerns about the influence of social media on our thinking.
After thorough academic analysis and data-driven investigations, the conclusion is rather straightforward: recommendation algorithms do not significantly exacerbate cognitive dilemmas. These dilemmas are more influenced by individual differences and psychological factors. However, I believe that regardless of this outcome, the debate surrounding this topic will persist because social media, integrated with recommendation algorithms, has become an integral part of our lives.
I plan to infuse the notion of 'people fearing their cognitive autonomy being hijacked by social media' into the game's core concept, presented in a lighthearted manner to encourage players to consider the cognitive effects of social media. My main objective for the game is to stimulate player reflection on this issue in an engaging and flexible way, ensuring the gameplay remains enjoyable.

Hello, Tian. Your research direction is evidently fascinating, especially the part related to social media and recommendation algorithms. These issues are undeniably highly relevant in today's society. However, what surprises me is you found that recommendation algorithms do not exacerbate cognitive dilemmas. I look forward to seeing your perspective on this matter in your game. I also have a few questions: How are cognitive dilemmas formed? What significant and profound impacts do they have on our lives? And how do you plan to depict this phenomenon in your work? In any case, I'm eagerly anticipating your future game!
I don't know if this is an insane coincidence or if this is just the most heated topic in social media right now but my research was on the same topic! The only difference is that you found that algorithms don't actually have a profound effect on people's cognitive autonomy. I'm curious to know what you found in your research to reach this conclusion and I'm excited to see what you have in mind for a game that depicts this!
