This was one of the most fun ones I've played! I wish there were a one sentence description on pieces so I could learn about them (I never figured out some of my own pieces even by level 7) but still had such a fun time. The game gets so out of control on the high levels, it's amazingly fun and silly.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that the pieces are confusing… I never considered one-sentence descriptions, though. Appreciate it.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm bad at chess, but this went on for an embarassingly long time before I realized that the reason the movement seemed erratic was because the pieces weren't all actual chess pieces.

This is an extremely clever game and it was fun to play. Not knowing exactly what the pieces did opened the floor for some experimentation and it really felt like you were mastering a system when you played. It's a good feeling.

I think my only gripe is that it seems you only get a single piece from each victory. It leads to some extremely conservative play, which might be the point, or else you have to be slowly ground down through attrition as you find more challenging opponents - which might also be the point.

Thank you so much for the kind words and feedback. I can’t say I put much thought into the balancing (calling attrition “the point” is generous) so I really appreciate hearing a gripe like this.

This is a really clever idea for a game. I loved being able to recruit defeated pieces, and growing an army as I explored the dungeon. Reminded of the MtG game Shandalar or the Shining Force series. Excellent work. I don't know enough about chess to understand what the names for the opening moves were (I got King's Best Friend Gambit a couple of times) but being able to see what how the unfamiliar pieces could move, made the game really fun to pick up and learn. Awesome job!

Thanks so much for the kind words! Regarding the opening names, I pretty much just went through a list of openings and added random nouns and stuff to it, so really just flavor. ‘King’s Best Friend’ in particular is a reference to the King’s Indian Defense, but those things are more just easter eggs if you know chess

This also reminded me of Shandalar! I love that game and it was great.

Interesting take on the chess formula. I liked that I can recruit conquered pieces for future battles! Plus showing the possible moves by clicking on the enemy pieces was really helpful.

The added chess pieces (I encountered so far) were all very imaginative. Very good entry to the jam!

Very clever!  I have to say, the way you brought in new kinds of chess pieces interplayed them against a roguelike metagame was genius!
