I like this a lot, it's a real brain bending game. The Scrabble-like spatial awareness and spelling strategies alone make this compelling, but it really does feel like a living Scrabble board. I am curious about the distribution of letters dealt to the player, I felt I had to play carefully in order to avoid expending all my vowels. Would love to see how a pro Scrabble player would approach the game. My only critique would be to display the player's letters a bit larger and clearer, though I understand working within ASCII/tile space constraints may make that a tall order, especially considering the scope of the jam. Really well done.
Thanks for the great feedback! Right now the letter pool is a fixed probability for each letter. It should be ~40% of your letters are vowels, which if you're like me and carelessly make short words with multiple vowels, then you will start to run dry. I do recommend using the spells and items to manage your letters and find more of what you need. In the future I think moving to a system where the odds change based on the letters you are holding could help to make the experience smoother.
It's a neat premise, but if you think about each turn for as long as I did then it's very slow-paced. I played for a long time but by the time I lost interest I had only made it to depth 3. The execution seems polished, though, and the gameplay is novel. Overall, it's definitely an interesting experiment.
Super interesting idea and very well executed. To be honest, for me, a non-native casual english speaker, this kind of game is very very hard, particularly due to the letter restrictions. I understand that's not a problem with the game, tho. Would love to see a localized version! :) Good job
I really like the idea of this game, it's very clever. However, I found it so difficult! I could barely move away from where I started, I managed to kill a rat/tar, but that's as far as I got. It started me off in the bottom right of the screen and I found it really hard to think up words to move upwards and left, I would have appreciated smaller levels and more letters! :) Can't fault the game on a technical level, it's super well-presented and fits squarely into the mold of a Rogue-like. Is there a letter frequency to decide which letters you get, like how some letters in Scrabble are more common than others?
