So here I am, coming into this jam fashionably late, browsing through the exposition per usual, when I come across this absolute gem

made by the wonderful Lumbud84, who thankfully gave me permission to make a game based on it!

I'll admit, I'm a sucker for games that are meant to be therapeutic, games that are focused on making you feel reassured or giving you hope, stuff like that. And once I read the captions on the cover I knew exactly the game I wanted to make.

So here's my journey of making apathello (name pending), a short, comforting experience that also doubles as a breathing exercise, with minimal interactive elements. Enjoy!

Day 1 & 2

I actually started working on some roughs yesterday, before even getting permission. It's been at least 3 years (holy shit) since I last touched Godot, and so I needed to refamiliarize myself with the software, as well as make sure I was able to implement the stuff I thought of. And after a lot of furious googling, I had a basic proof of concept. Hooray!

And then today, after getting the green light from the artist, I downloaded some vector assets and figured out the last big thing I needed. But at that point, my test scene had gotten REALLY messy, so I decided to make a proper main scene and do a visual composition. For that I needed some test art, and so after a lot of fiddling with both the art and the composition, I ended up with this:

I think it works ok visually, I might spice it up with a stylized outline. I'm also definitely gonna redo the character art. Something about it just doesn't sit right with me...

Here's hoping I'll finalize the base sprite tommorow!

Day 3

Did art today, started by redrawing the base sprite and finally had something I liked. Then, I "animated" 2/3 idle animations I needed. Might be able to finish character art tommorow or the day after, we'll see!

Day 4

Just some steady progress on sprite animation today, hopefully should be able to finish the rest tommorow. I also haven't tested any of today's art in motion so fingers crossed it looks good lol

Day 5-7

Took a break from working on the game for a couple of days because I was tired. I've now finished all the art and I'm slowly working on code and implementation. The first build should be ready by the end of the week, hopefully.
