There's a little bit of everything here, character customization was a nice touch for the game. I agree with Dark Dungeon, Halberd is OP, but if it weren't for Halberd I would have died more often in the game than I did. Spiders scared me, good work!

Character customization +1
Different weapons +1
Audio +1
Music +1

Random dungeon each time? +1

Struggled attacking downwards
Halberd is OP!
Would've loved to see a goal, or end to the game.

Wow, thanks :-)

Yeah the dungeons are randomly generated but only after the first one. That is if you descend to level 2 that and all other dungeons are random.

Totally agree the Halberd is OP. I “love” how you can stand in a doorway and drop 4 of the enemies at once.

I too struggle with attacking downwards, in fact I struggle with controlling the attacks full stop. I think we need to do something like lock the camera when in combat so you can use the mouse to control the attacks more easily.

The plan was that if you descend far enough you meet Devil Bob himself. But we didn’t get that far.

Really awesome idea!
Would love to see how it progresses, if you're planning on further developing it.

Played it with xansd. She'll split the money with me, won't she? Edit: there is one enemy with a looping death animation. The respawning enemies made it a bit confusing to figure out where you had been already. The character controller feels alright for melee strafing, but feels very good for running forward while steering. That's unusual (in a good way) and I bet you could build on that to make a running/movement-driven melee game. I played it a bit extra because it was fun, reminded me of diablo or gauntlet legends a bit

Thanks for the comments and feedback - really helpful.

Believe it or not it’s not a looping death animation. It’s a weird Emerald AI bug that I’ve not managed to track down yet. It happens on two of the zombies, but very infrequently on one of them and reasonably frequently, but not always on another. I have no idea what is causing it :-(

I agree re the controller, it has strengths and weaknesses. Yolan built that and I had real difficulty controlling it, especially when going for the downstroke to kill the crawlers. I plan to use it as the NPC controller in my own game so I won’t need to worry as much about it there ;-)

It’s awesome that you played it a bit more ‘cos it was fun. That’s not usually the way with Game Jam games! The goal was indeed to be like diablo / gauntlet legends. The intention was to give upgrades to team members to make them stronger. The mechanic is in there (hit F1, F2, F3) but we only ever got the time for one powerup - the health pack :-(

I liked that I could play a lady, it was nice to be able to choose. Neat that there was some customization. I noticed there were some different hits with the weapons but couldn't quite figure out how I was doing it. I picked up the halberd and it was a one shot kill of everyone, too powerful. Combat felt a little disconnected. I collected 2100 gold though and feel like a rich lady. The game was laggy, was running 15-40 FPS. I found the premise fun, I would like to see the boss i fight at the end of that dungeon. I really like the mimics, since I was a gold collector they startled me and that was fun.

Glad you liked that there was a lady there. Yolan and I didn’t discuss it so it’s awesome that we both felt it was important individually. Though I don’t know if you noticed, there was something strange happening with her hair when in the dungeon (it is see-through from behind).

I really struggled figuring out the controller too. Yolan wrote it (almost) from scratch during the Jam and as is so often the case bit off a little too much. Each weapon as around 20 attacks (though I think there was some duplication for the swords).

I think 2100 is likely a record. I certain never got above 1500 in testing, but if you were using the halberd then yeah… I guess so.

15-40 FPS is better than I expected given we both have beast cards and we didn’t do any optimization. So I reckon we could get that up to 60+ with work. We can also reduce effects like fog and so on for lower end cards. Next game jam we should leave a day for optimizations.

We did have a boss fight planned, but well… game jam timing :-(

Glad the mimic spooked you. I wanted to add it to an UMA as a head, so when you triggered it thse legs and arms would unfold and it would run away, only to hunt you down and jump at you later. Two scares for the price of one… but again… Game Jam timing.

Thanks for your feedback , really helpful and encouraging.

This is not an easy game :) There was a nice variety of monsters. I liked the UMA customization. The music was also good. My companions died fighting the crawler zombies that are not easy to hit at all. In the end I just had to run away. Good job!

Nope not easy at all. I have found, from years of watching horror movies, the companions always die unless they run away… you did the right thing ;-)
