NEWSFLASH : Added an 24 hours onto the JAM Submission deadline

It seems that a few people are struggling so I added 24 hours to the jam in the hope it will give a bit of breathing space. It still technically means that the jam finishes on October 31st (in Hawaii), but for most people this is a November 1st deadline now.

Much appreciated, thank you! Means I'll actually be able to playtest this thing a few times before submission!

...and just having submitted with just over five hours to go, I certainly made the most of the extra time!  Thanks again :)

Thank goodness for the extension. I had all sorts of technical issues. Internet dropped out 40 minutes before the deadline, just when I wanted to upload the game. Itch.io required a cover image in a bigger size than the title screen and I had to prepare a new one. (I'd forgotten about that.) Submissions page had

extra fields that I wasn't prepared for and no text in the Submit button, so I couldn't find what to click on and kept going around in circles. Sheesh. If not for the extension, I would have been just seconds overtime.

Now to have a quick bite to eat and that leaves me about 4 hours to do my tax return.

Well done on getting it over the line Gary. Your art looks excellent, and I am a big fan of the Delta 4 font too.

I noticed that Adventuron is not dealing with margins properly in your game (edge of graphics should ideally align to the left and right of your top bar), so maybe you can do an update with a fix for this once I have it sorted.

I think I won't update the regular edition of Adventuron for now, because it's too risky to update when people are submitting their games so I'll post an updated URL once the fix is made and you can try it out yourself before doing an update (or you may think the current margin behaviour is preferred, in which case I'll show you have to force Adventuron to maintain the current layout).

I like the Delta 4 font, but I'm having trouble with it. No matter what I do, I can't get it to scale down. There's about 35 columns and this is too big for mobile. I'll be doing an update in a day or two and will change the font unless you've got a solution for me.

I can certainly help with this, and document the scaling logic at the same time.

Certainly don't drop the font, I think it fits rather well.

First issue should be simple, the next issue will take a longer post:

Have you tried adjusting (underneath theme)

columns_mobile = ???

(higher number is smaller font, lower number is bigger font).

That's the simple way of scaling text on mobile (which has a high DPI screen). Desktop text scaling is more complex, because non integer scaling is not supported by default in adventuron, and if it were, the bitmap fonts would look a blurry mess (believe me, I tried).

There are ways around this, and I'll follow this up, but please try the above setting first, if it's not working, then something is definitely wrong.

Can you recommend an appropriate value before I set down the long road of trial and error?

I think the 8x8 font is a problem. It's too wide even on a desktop. If I was to design my own font, what would you recommend for character width and height?

Host

Delta 10 is more like 7 (x() x10 (y) as it's a proportional font and I added 2 pixels of vertical height to it to make it look better on modern displays.

As far as the mobile columns value, start with 36 and work your way down. I recommend taking a screenshot of the current screen so you can remember the current text density when making a comparison for how it looks.

I sent you an email with how to resolve the desktop scaling.

Everyone else, once this is resolved, I'll update the documentation on scaling so the information is not lost.
