  • The theme practically glows through this game; it's a loving 3d recreation of a classic, with a goofy twist. That said, this game is tragically incomplete.

    Liked:
    + Fantastic 3d assets
+ Level editor is a nice touch
+ Amusing take on the theme

    Needs Work:
    - Sound.
    - needs multiplayer, even AI-only

Everything on display here- 3d assets, an impressively fleshed-out level editor, core driving mechanics- is top-notch. The fit and finish of everything down to the main menu feels more like a commercial indie release than a month-long jam!

The total lack of sound and, so far as I could tell, AI competitors or multiplayer, makes it far less enjoyable than it could be. I sincerely hope the team keeps working- I would love to play this when it's really finished.

Elevator pitch
The sequel to a certain Exciting Motorbike game you never knew you wanted! Comes with a fully-featured track editor that creates easy-to-share track data strings (or export to JSON).

Describe how your game adheres to the theme
Mostly literally - a sequel no one was exactly clamoring for, with inconsequential upgraded graphics, but a featureset that remains mostly the same (besides that sweet Third Wheel, that is)

Pros:
  • Technically impressive
  • Seriously, this thing's a full thing
Cons:
  • No audio/progression
  • Not much evolution on the concept
Here & There:

It's a shame time ran out and so many small things are missing, but it is still pretty crazy that you've built a fully functioning game and level-editor on top of that. My only real complaint with the game is that it doesn't really build upon Excitebike besides adding a wheel to the player's vehicle. I have to assume there was even more stuff planned but without it it's less of a sequel and more of a remake. I didn't do much research into the thing, but it seems like a lot of the obstacles match Excitebike or those xbox360 Excite____ sequels which doesn't necessarily help the sequel component. I spelt out ASS but it came out as A1S2 which is acceptable. The vertical speed is pretty slow relative to lateral speed and so most obstacles are too difficult to miss. Considering your past submissions I have no doubt this was going to be a bigger thing or that it could still be made into that.

This is technically impressive for the time spent on it, though I have to say right off the bat its a pity the game had no sound.

The overheat thing could be better indicated, either a flashing bar or smoke coming from your machine whenever it happens (maybe something visual on the bike itself so you don't have to look down at the hud?).

Steering felt _really_ sluggish, making it practically impossible to avoid oncoming obstacles.

Seems like the finish line is bugged in the create a track mode? Seemed to only work once then never again. The track creator mode is incidentally an insane addition in this time frame.

Visually the game looks great! It plays fine apart from the steering issues imo.

Thanks for your input! We got what we could in there, but ultimately ran out of time. I agree that better in-game feedback like you've described would improve the experience. The track editor was integral to the game, as that's how all the tracks are made, so a lot of good work went into getting that working right before getting the racing mechanics in. When testing your track in the editor, the finish line doesn't reset your position as you have to push the "exit test" button or push esc, but when you save the track, and play it through the main menu, it should work like the others. Either way, we appreciate your feedback, and will be updating this game in the future to be more what we had envisioned. Thanks again!

Solid idea, I really think you did a great job on the graphics.

I wish the rules were explained a bit more. I popped into the first race and was pressing buttons to see what everything did. I don't think it hurts to leave "Press X to accelerate!\nPress Z to boost!" in something like a jam game, especially.

I was hoping for a little more feedback. I saw there was a "Third place" time in the bottom right, but that didn't seem to do anything when I finished the race? What was the second place time? It would be cool to see a results screen after the race with your time (and your medal), the gold medal time, the silver medal time, and the bronze medal time. And then an option to replay! I think that would be a much bigger incentive for the user to replay stages.

It's pretty tricky to change lanes. I'm not sure you get a lot from being the user y position be a float. It might work better if the user snapped between lanes? It was just hard to judge when I was in or out of mud or grass, and stuff like the barriers that blocked two lanes seemed almost impossible to dodge.

You know this comment is coming, but sound! This really needs sound! The rev of the engine, different SFX for if you're in mud or grass, the cheer of the crowd!

Thank you for your feedback! Most of those are things the team knew needed work, but your input is helpful and it's good to have our suspicions confirmed. We intended to have the finish screen much like the original Excitebike, and like what you've described, but we ran out of time to implement a number of things, like the sounds we had made... We will be updating it in the future, so stay tuned. Thanks again!

I love Excitebike and this looks really good! Unfortunately the lack of sound and sluggish controls really let this game down. The art assets look faithful and modern and the UI and general look of the game is polished well. I really hope this game gets an update because I feel with some polish to the game play it could be really good.

TomR: Thanks for playing! We are big Excitebike fans as well. We are definitely going to continue updating the game, we have most of the sounds created we just ran out of time for the submission. Check back soon.
