  • This game has really nice art, but it gave me some of the weirdest technical problems I dealt with. I also could not play the game it is an unnecessary sequel to, so I could not evaluate its’ merits in that regard. Ultimately though when it did work, I found the core loop lacking.

    Liked

    • Voxel art is super cute
    • Intro cutscene is nice

    Needs Work

    • Technical problems/glitches
    • Theme Adherence
    • Very repetitive
    • UI

Starting with the technical issues, I had to get an .ini file in order to launch the game in 720p windowed, because nothing worked properly on my (admittedly odd) 3 monitor setup. Once in the game, it would always go through the intro cutscene whenever I hit “play” from the main menu. The game never told me how to unlock other levels until I got it as a loading screen tooltip after unlocking another level. I 100% completed the aquarium level and nothing happened - I had to let the guards catch me in order to get back to the menus. That unlocked the library - I played the library and it unlocked the park, but it re-locked the library...and then after playing the park both the library and the aquarium were gone.

This game needs more feedback in the game itself, some kind of notification popping up that you unlocked a new stage would’ve gone a long way towards fighting my confusion (and also the unlock system working properly). Having an exit when you cleared all the eatable-people would help, since running around confused is not fun. Secondly the game needs something else to do - I would like to see some way to lose the cops, since without that every level turns in to the same routine of zapping people and then kiting the cops until you get bored.

Elevator pitch
Delicous action top down shooter where you transform people into chocolate. Laser, eat, run, repeat!

Describe how your game adheres to the theme
This game is a sequel for an old attempt at a UE4 Game Jam, and the previous game was horrible. There is no doubt this is a sequel no one asked for.

Opening animation is stupendous, love it. Great animations.

I love leaderboards, and this one seems pretty good! It's fun to see your name on there... But I think a leaderboard is best paired with the ability to replay a level really quickly. And as far as I can tell, you have to go back to the main menu between every play of a level? And then you have to watch the opening animation again (hm, sporadically? It seems like it's not making me view the animation again every time)

The cops are really strong, seems like. I can hold them off for a hot second, but then all my juice is used up! And I was already laying on the juice to make as much chocolate as possible!

Thanks for the review Some Brothers Studio.
As I said in another comment, you shouldn't see the opening animation more than one time. It is a bug and will be fixed in the future.
But I agree with you game, the game is lacking a Retry button for quick replay. Thanks again!

Pros:
  • Nicely drawn intro to introduce the premise
  • Clean cute models and general design to the environments
  • Good implementation of leaderboards which replace your entry if you do better instead of simply adding a dupe
Cons:
  • Fullscreen by default and no option to change
  • Ending of the level only by getting caught even if you've eaten every person available, have to go through intro after each level
  • Music doesn't loop and the laser sound effect sometimes doesn't trigger
Here & There:

The concept seems so simple that it would be boring, but it was a nice, short game which felt pretty good to play. The music and style are clean and cute though there are little issues around the edges. Theme adherence seems to work but most people won't be aware of your previous game, so making it a bigger part of this game somehow could have helped to drive home the connection and improvements you made here. I would have played more levels, especially if there were some additions to the loop that kept it fresh like traps, different types of cops, or items to use.

Thanks for the review SAGiggs.
Unfortunatelly, you shouldn't have to go through the intro after each level. It is a bug and will be fixed.
We will keep your suggestions in mind for the next version release.

Nice intro and consistent art style, and some cool gameplay concepts. The game becomes trivial once you figure out how to kite the cops though. Also it would be nice to have an option not to submit to the leaderboard.

Developer

Thanks Rectus, I'll add a Skip Leaderboard option.

Host

Hey just a heads up, your external link triggers pop-up blockers. Making it hard to download your game.

In the future you should use Itch.io's hosting.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback Jon. I used external file hosting because the only internet connection I had was from my smartphone, and I got a lot of errors trying to upload the game with it. Using Drive was really my last resource.
