Hello there! My name is Blockmaster100. I am 15 and enjoy coding in Lua and more recently (very recently) GDScript in Godot. Recently I chose Godot to start making basic games in. (Infact this is my first jam!)

I am working with another member to form a 2 man team. I am responsible for the code and putting the game together while the other member is responsible for assets. We both share the task of creating ideas and a story for our game.

Talking about the game, here is the main concept:

  • A short visual novel about an evil corporation trying to take over the Earth
  • You play as the protagonist and make important decisions throughout the journey to (hopefully) save the world.

DAY 1:

This game idea has been in our heads for the best part of 6 months and today was finally the day to build up the courage to make it. I spent the most part of today fiddling with the customisation of the Dialogic addon (a very useful tool in creating similar games to this). However, we did get a bit of progress done. First of all, we made the first mockup of the Earth. I think it looks pretty good, here it is:

The Earth will have multiple different stages depending on the choices you pick at different points in the game. No spoilers yet though as nothing is final!

Next we worked on the background that will stick throughout most of the game. It is meant to represent stars in space.

After those were set up in game I coded them to rotate and scale accordingly so they feel alive and less static. It gives the game a nice look without being too obtrusive.

Finally for day 1, I started to implement some early story of the game to see how it fits. I again wont show too much as it isn't finalised yet but here is a screenshot of what it currently looks like in game.

Here is probably a good time to say that you play as a man called Theodore O'Quinn who is living about 300 years in the future and is one of the only humans to rebel against the evil corporation. For now, the rest of the story is up to you to think of, I'd love to hear your ideas for the game though!(I might even implement them into the story)

Thank you for reading my day 1 devlog for Earth Renovation Program. I hope that you guys enjoy the idea and I hope that I can continue to work on the game. Your feedback means alot so don't be afraid to tell me.

Oooooooh this idea looks really intriguing. It鈥檚 so different from the usual themes on visual novels, I love it!

Can鈥檛 wait to see more.

Thank you! I'm glad that you think that. Hopefully you enjoy the full game!

Glad to see others here too! Thank you!

DAY 2:

Today we spent a good portion of our time on the game working on the story, improving the feel of the game and creating some assets. I started off by adding more to the story. This takes a long time due to the large quantities of formatting I have added to give the game a nice feel and make it less static.

Today is also the day where I can share a bit of the story we have so far! As stated yesterday, you play as the protagonist trying to save the planet Earth from an evil corporation. I can now explain that this corporation is trying to turn the entire Earth into a gigantic power source. Why Earth? The Universal Looker Army (the Overlooker's personal army) have identified the sun to be the most efficient power source in range and Earth is the only planet left remaining in the solar system. Hence the name, "Earth Renovation Program". You need to stop this from happening but the shear size of the ULA doesn't make it easy.

First off, I have improved the dialogue by adding more formatting and giving it a character. It is now really easy to see who is speaking now, which is important for later. Here you can see that in a screenshot.

Next up, I worked on the question system. For now I don't have the final buttons but I think it looks fine as a placeholder. Choices are a really important aspect of this game and other similar games as it will directly impact the story and ultimately, the ending you will have.

We also worked on a wide range of assets. Most of them being the different variations of the Earth throughout the playthrough you have. They turned out really good but, like most other things, are not final as of yet. Below you can the the different stages.

Another asset we worked on was the "Galaxy-wide phone". This will be very important to the story as it marks the point where it starts to fully branch off and depends on your input directly. We are also discussing possible gameplay ideas that include this phone, I doubt it will make it in so I won't explain anything we have on it so far but you can probably make your guesses. Here is the early design for this sprite.

I also managed to add one of these assets into the game, here is what that looks like.

Finally I added some background music and did a few other background related things that will not be seen until the game comes out.

Thank you for reading day 2 of the devlogs for "Earth Renovation Program", I really hope you guys enjoy this idea as much as me and the teammate do! Again, don't be afraid to give feedback, I would love to read it.

DAY 3:

Today we made no showable progress unfortunately. However, we now know roughly what is going to happen for a good chunk of the story.

Hopefully tomorrow I can have something to show to you guys.

DAY 4:

Hello, today lots of progress was made on implementing the story and discussing future assets. Again not too much to show however hopefully tomorrow I can show you guys the main menu and intro cutscene!

Today was the day where I started to branch of the story. Your decisions now alter the story throughout, meaning the game can change drastically each time you play.

I also managed to get two new characters in. The first one being a robot called R-034B, this robot is really important to the story if you go the correct path as you can learn a lot about the Overlooker.

The second character is a stranger that you only interact with in what I am calling the "Phone scene". He needs help escaping from the renovation program but doesn't want to leave his country.

Unfortunately with the type of game I am making, it is hard to show off what we have made without too many spoilers. Hopefully tomorrow can be different though!

Remember to send your feedback, I would love to read it!

DAY 5:

Today little progress was made on my end as I decided to take a short break (which you should do too every once in a while!). However, the assets for the main menu are done and I setup a rough design animation for the intro scene, not fancy or anything.

Tomorrow I am going to hopefully finish the main menu and intro scene so for the weekend I can work lots on the story.
