I played this on stream for Feedback Quest 7. The VOD has been posted to youtube; game starts at 1hr 40 min in

This game is so silly, but fun, and HARD. I played on an xbox compatible controller for pc. Controls were fine and smooth. Thank you for adding in an auto fire feature! Sometimes when I was trying to dodge attacks, I accidentally clicked the left stick down/in which caused my ship to fly slower. I'm not sure if binding the slowdown to one of the left buttons, such as Left Trigger, would make this easier. It's fine otherwise.

I wish there was a health power-up the way you can also get shield power-ups, as there were times where I got obliterated and needed just one more health to have survived. Also, it's easy to miss unlocks. Maybe add a "stage select" or similar after a mission is complete the first time so that you can go back in and play the 2nd part, where you get ship unlocks, instead of having to redo the whole mission.

The ship with rotating shields was a solid option, as was the indestructible ship. The final ship that unlocks, the iron one, might be better if unlocked early and the tiny ship be the last one, since that ship is the hardest one to do anything with (it does provide a huge difficulty spike!)

Good fun overall!!!

I played this game on my stream (VOD) and you were there :)

Overall, this game is hard! I watched Hythrain play it and he made it look easy haha. I don't think I would have gotten far if not for the ghost potato being invulnerable :D

I really liked that there was a ghost potato that was invulnerable. It was a lot of fun killing the enemy ships that way.

The 3rd ship I tried, the one with rotating shields, was pretty fun to play too! I didn't notice that the outer shields would eventually get depleted though, so maybe changing the visual there a bit might help?

Fun game!

Great improvement from the previous time I have played it on feedback quest 6, keep it up :)

Thanks!

Back then I think it was in early alpha/pre-alpha, and it's well into Beta now. Some more work and I think it'll be ready for Gold! :D

I had fun playing your space shooter and I like the potato theme. I liked the mouse controls for movement.

I found that wave weapon was wide enough so that sometimes I was not worried at all about getting hit while still being able to hit the enemy ships. You could add a toggle to shooting to save on the player holding down on the left mouse button the whole time.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! There is a fire button toggle in the game already. The Default keybinds are:

  • Mouse: Middle Mouse Button/Scroll Wheel button, or Side Button 1
  • Keyboard: "E", or "H"
  • Gamepad: "Y"/Triangle/Face Button North

The keybinds can be changed at any time in Options > Controls.

Hello LMG,

happy to try Potato Strike after seeing your development journey, and thanks for being there on the stream and a involved member of the Quest.

I like how it's coming along, you are getting the fireworks aspect down, I appreciate the ghost ship function lol This is already a very polished game. Just need add a bit of its own special sauce to make people be excited for it.

Some suggestions to try:

1. Consider more food jokes in your game design and lore, really sell the potato theme, add some food joke lore, don't take itself too seriously can crack the audience up and give them something unexpected increasing fun factor.

2. Consider adding more different bullet shapes. Maybe spinning Fries shapes, or turn some of the waves/bullet into food like colors to strengthen the food space fight theme. A reference for a popular similar genre game Astral Gunners may help give you some ideas.

3. The bullet hell fireworks are in, I am just not sure with the intensity of some of the enemies that people could find the gaps to evade enough of the bullets. I will leave this part for other streamers who are more used to the genre to give feedback on.

4. Love how the potato gets beaten up, maybe add a sense of being burnt with some additional text like "BURNT" or "TOASTED" in more comic like font with some sound bites on top when you are defeated, it would add to the humor aspect of this game.

5. You already know this one, add to the boss designs as we progress through different missions, very minor updates like different colors and different details can really give the sense of progression.

Best wishes to Potatostrike and your success. ^_^

Thanks for the suggestions!

A lot of people have requested me to add more lore/story to the game, so I'll see what I can cook up, pun intended. I might also add a variation of the combat dialogue system from Aerostrike to bosses, so they talk briefly when they spawn and are defeated. Enemy patterns will also be looked at a bit on the upcoming patch, and more in-depth in following ones.

This was a really cool space shooter. I had trouble getting a hang of the controls. Using the mouse moved the ship and I was expecting to only shoot with the mouse button. I liked the different weapons (the wave beam ended up being my go-to since it was the easiest to use) and the fact that I could change the ship's movement speed in the menu. Solid game and I'd like to see more in the future.

Developer

Thanks! Did you manage to get used to the Mouse controls or did you end up switching to Keyboard/Controller?
