This feels like an 80s as all hell hacking adventure, which is good because its a hacking adventure set in the 80s. I am on record saying that I love random dungeon generators and I do like the map gen here, though I would advise that referees mark entrances and exits on their grids after creating a floor, helps keep track of where players can and can't go. I will say it did take me a while to wrap my head around it as well as some of the unique mechanics featured such as Data loss and Parity Bits. I feel like they should have been explained in their own section. Other than that Disks and Daemons is a neat little one page adventure.

This looks like a very neat, infinitely re-playable trifold. Design is super simple and clean.

I was a little bit confused about what the dice on the rooms on page two meant as they weren’t consistent (i.e. Office of the Future vs. C-Suite). My interpretation is that’s how many of each die type you need to roll (X negative space dice + Y room dice).

I was a bit confused about PARITY BITS as they weren’t explained up front the way TOKENS are. Though I did find where they were sorta hidden using the search function. I wonder if perhaps TOKENS and PARITY BITS could be rolled up into the same resource or if that would be too punishing. The idea of balancing keeping Daemons happy vs avoiding data loss could be interesting.

I definitely missed a few important sentences in my quest to make everything fit into the pamphlet. You interpreted the floor dice correctly! And I should have the extra resources introduced and explained before I describe how they can ruin FIST's day. Two resources might be too many - I'll consider if they need to get trimmed down. I could simply have checkpoints between floors demand TOKENS, or something similar.

Most of my focus went into the layout, so I'm glad it's clean!

Disks and Daemons is slick hacker-corporate dungeon generator that creates a bustling zone for your players to explore and escape before they dissolve into hapless bytes.

Style:

  • The computer admin / office / 90's hacker vibe and theme is fully explored and leant into at every opportunity
  • The layout is clear, feels on-theme and like it would be easy to use during a game (I'm really impressed with Typst's flexability)
  • The black/white dice icons and diagrams are clear and effective

Content:

  • The concept is rad and executed brilliantly
  • The hook is clear (love that the stakes aren't immediately world ending), the unique data-loss mechanic effective and the combination of generated rooms and flavourful foes creates a clear 'zone' that is both dangerous and has an internal logic that the players could exploit and explore
  • Love an inspirations list
  • Ironically, the concept feels super simple to hack (which is a compliment!), and I'm keen to see how this tech / mechanic could be explored in other settings

What might I change?

  • No notes!

Thank you for the kind words! I put a lot of effort into those dice icons to make them clean and consistent, and I'm glad you liked the theme! There's a lot of directions I can take the tech in, and the project files are open source if someone wants to start hacking.
