Just realised that this is now on the front page of the Godot web site. Nice work!

This was fantastic! Very well done. Love the style, humor, and mechanics!

There was an interesting bug I hit: I was able to draw the sword before being sent back to hell, but wasn't able to swing it (so that first death still occurred). Then after, I was gifted the sword I was already holding, as it sparkled slightly and my character reacted in awe ;D It's a fun bug at least, reminds me of some of the old NES/SNES games ;D

I was actually getting a bit frustrated at first from the lack of a "direct up/down" attack. I kept wanting to press up+attack, but would just be gifted with a slow death animation. I finally found a nice flow with that awesome mob logic by kiting the enemies back and forth: lead them away and into a line, back and swipe, retreat, etc. However, then I'd have to backtrack after a massive massacre and make sure I didn't miss anything, which felt a bit jarring with . I'm wondering if enemies re-spawing would help keep the pace a bit better, and keep the player on their toes a bit more. Wouldn't have to be all out mobs, but just slow enough to catch unwary or pokey players off guard. This game seems like a great fit for a high difficulty and heavy suspense.

Everything else about the game is so great. Everything has that juiciness, the transformation mechanic worked well and had a lot of promise for puzzles, and you packed a large amount of content and polish. It's extremely impressive! Can't wait to see more ;D

This has a really great 'game feel'. The fighting had weight to it which I appreciated. I also loved the music and the graphics (especially the rain effects). It was a really nice atmosphere.

Absolutely fantastic. I love it and want more.

Amazing!!

Wow.
You've produced a complete strong atmosphere I want to dive in.

Every swing looked and sounded meaningful, which made it super satisfying to play. I liked the darker tone of the graphics and music.

In the first ten seconds I ran in an died, and upon re-spawning couldn't see my character or interact with anything other than moving the screen around, but I didn't experience that again after I restarted.

Developer

Thanks for the comment! I'm really glad you enjoyed hacking and slashing... I really tried to aim at player satisfaction there. As for the original music and sfx, it is all from @mundusnine. He's the soundmaster that not only created all but also who managed to go through my very hacky code to integrate everything.

I'm sorry for the bug... It is supposed to work a bit like that. For some 2~3 seconds after respawning, enemies should ignore the player so that it has a chance to get away from any tricky situation. It might have happened that the hacked system broke down. Thanks for reporting it! I'll check it out on a post-jam version.

I've opened a bug report for the issue described here: https://github.com/securas/goj/issues/6

Developer

Oh UAU! Thanks for taking the time to raise all the issues and pull requests. I'll adress them ASAP.

Nice game ! i follow you on facebook ;-)  but where id throwback theme?

Developer

Cheers! I'm glad you liked it fellow Godoeter!
The throwback theme is on the transformations and returning to the original form. I thought I would use that mechanic to make puzzlesinstead of actually throwing things around .

Awesome job you've done here! I'm pretty sure I would've been satisfied just hitting things the whole time and more with how juicy the swings feel hahaha. Nice art, sound, and clear mechanics that bring it all together. Good job!

Great looking and super satisfying game! Those sword swipes are VERY crunchy and nice. I sometimes felt like some of the hit boxes could use a little fine tuning, but that was rare. Although, I wasn't sure how to progress after clearing the screen of all the floating enemies. Maybe I'm missing something?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the comment! There is indeed some tuning that must be made!
As for progressing in the game, I think transforming might help.

Cheers!

I loved everything! The music was very close to the scenery.

The graphics were very beautiful. Everything is very fluid and perfect.

I found inspiration from hell with a moon illuminating something resembling the sea.

Congratulations on the beautiful work.
And mostly for using Godot Engine to do all of this.
Incredibly GREAT!

It would be awesome if you released a linux run

Developer(+1)

Your wish is my command! I can't upload more files on itch but I've just created a linux release on Github.

You can find it here: https://github.com/securas/goj/releases/tag/dvd_01

WOW! This is just amazing ヽ(•‿•)ノ
Audio is beyond awesome so are the special effects and animations.
Gameplay is so smooth. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Glad you liked it! You might wanna check out @mundus' work. He was the sound master for this project.

Very awesome. There was bug in the beginning sometimes where when you respawn, you respawn off that map and can't get back onto it. But that was the only thing and I totally wanted to play until end! A first for me so far.

Developer

Ops! I must have missed that one bug on the squashing stage. Actually... There are probably more to squash on a post jam version! Thanks for pointing it out and I'm really glad you finished it! Thanks for the review!

Attack animation and game fell on high level

Developer

Cheers!

Just loved it!
It is just simple enough to understand yet deep enough to entertain. Congratulation on that. By the way if I understood well the interpretation of theme...damn it is just as simple and deep as the gameplay.

I would suggest to make hitbox reflects the actual visual feedback for the attack, but apart from that the game is good, I will replay it, definitely

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! I made I so that it would be easy to hack and slash everything in the game ;) I'm really glad to get these reviews from fellow godotoers! Cheers!

I kicked the devils butt! Great game, I love it! Allthough I hade to build a Linux version myself and turn down the rain effect to be able to play it, but it was worth it.

Developer(+1)

Well done! Great that you managed to finish and I really appreciate you having built and customized your own version. The rain is really resource consuming and it was a hard decision to keep or remove it. I really feard cases like yours where it would be too slow to have fun... Thank you soooooo much for taking the trouble to rebuild it.

I love the pixel art and art style. The feel of the sword is very satisfying and all of the animations are nice and smooth. Great work!

Developer

Cheers! Thanks for the review!
