If you have 150 scrap you can buy another life by selecting the smaller ship at the bottom of the screen.

I wish I could have had more time to add a tutorial for some stuff, but I uploaded last minute. You can buy another life if you die if you have 150 scrap.

You can't directly attack anything. You need to deflect the missile from the big ship into it or other ships to do damage, but the enemy ships with also try to deflect the missiles.
Destroying smaller ships gets you scrap that you can use to get turrets that will automatically destroy the enemy ships (which is needed the more you damage the bigger ship)
