Nostalgia-centric gaming

In our game, we tried to capture the feel of gaming from the early 80's. Our art is done in the CGA palette (only 4 colors), and our music was written with Commodore 64 synthesizers. Which of you jammers created games trying to capture the feel of a specific era of gaming? Could be anything from the Magnavox Odyssey to nausea-inducing first run of VR games. I'd love to see your take on some piece of gaming nostalgia!

You can play our game Ka-Bob here: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/460345

Since I knew there wasn’t time to do a lot of art for this Jam, and the game I made had very Arcadey gameplay I tried to emulate the image I had of old Arcade games in a 3D game, specifically a kinda retro horror look. Sticking to mostly green, blues and black for everything, basic digital beep and bop noises, with a pixelation effect on top of everything.

I like to think it's the kinda game TV shows would use when they wanted to make it look like they were playing a reto game.

Oh yeah, this game definitely reminds of me playing early 3D arcade games. The sounds and that pixel effect you added (how'd you do that, btw?) make the art stand out. Grainy graphics like this made horror games of the era much more terrifying (your imagination can scare you much more than graphics could). Great entry!

I've gone back to the days of DOS with the art style in mine.

Except for the font anyway :(

I'm trying to play our game, but it doesn't open. I wait a couple minutes and never see the game open up. I had to go into the task manager and kill it. (Tried a handful of times with the same thing happening each time). Any ideas?

some people found mine nostalgic, you might want to try it!

I really like this crt monitor look! How did you do that?

Submitted

Simple! With unity's post processing tool. It's easy to use and pretty cool. I hope you like my game and rate it :)

May you post the asset store link please? The one I was using stoped working since 2018.3. Rated!

The one on the asset store is not working. You must use the version 2. You need to load it somewhere from packet manager but i can't remember now and i am not on my pc. Just google it, unity post processing pack version 2, it should appear. Thanks for rating

Hi guys!

My game is called Room.

It's a desktop puzzle game where you need to use the clues from the computer to escape the room. You got only one chance to do this. If u fail solving the puzzle the first and only time... The application won't open again.

Tried implementing a desktop interface like windows 98(Not exactly like it..but something similar to it)

We used pre rendered 3D models just like in donkey kong country and camera angles from prince of persia for DOS . I think it didn't get the oldschool vibe but it was worth trying. What do you guys think?

This was the result:

Hey! We were super inspired by the old fashion metroidvanias with ours!
I spent too long during the jam looking at Castlevania and Super Metroid to get the right flow and feel!
Then we just tried to condense it all! We even put a secret reference to a Chozo statue in it! :D

MICROVANIA - A One Screen Mini-Metroidvania with a Twist!

And a few notes to help you play it! (The Game Jam build has a few bugs and quality of life issues)
- It works with Keyboard OR Gamepad
- You can view the controls in the menu (Esc or Start)
- The Player has 3x Health but will be instantly killed by Dragon Fire
- If you die twice, you should close and reopen the game (it breaks more and more with each death)
- There are two Winning Endings (You Kill the Dragon, or You Give the Dragon What it's Looking for!)
- There are 5 secret Gems hidden throughout the game if you can't find the last one, keep looking!

Mine is literally about nostalgia - as you leave your place and hit the road. I plays with the feeling you get with something you never quit liked, but will probably miss nevertheless. :)

Our game has retro aesthetics, more because we lacked artists and I like doing pixel art, but still, maybe you like it, try it if you can ^^

I'm a huge fan of minimalist pixel art, so nothing to hold against you there. Nice work getting as much content in there as you did! Gotta ask,  though: Can you break those cracks in the wall? I kept trying to get those exploders next to it, but couldn't never make it happen.

Hi. I am going to play/rate your game. Hopes rate for mine as well. Appreciate. (•̀•́) و ̑̑
