Hey, cool idea! It took some time figuring it out how to kill enemies as the electricity sources are not emphasised, but then I got it and it was interesting. I had some troubles with movement and collision, but not so serious. Great concept! Slowmo rocks:)
This is a good game! I like the style you started with using doodles to tell the story. I think the doodle style is better than the style you went with in the game itself, so maybe you could work with that.
The gameplay is also fun, as I have to constantly shoot the robots while finding the best position to hit the electricity. The level design is also great, starting with robots that can't kill you to learn mechanics, then slowly build up to deadly robots.
I was having a bit of trouble with the player movement and collision though, sometime's I'd bump into a wall I still have some distance from. It felt really hindering and I think it should be fixed
I like that you went with a slo-mo animation to emphasize the kills, but maybe make it faster and not as zoomed-in, so we can appreciate the elaborate connections we end up making. Animating electricity going through the wire would be great as well.
Can't wait to see this polished and expanded!
runs smoothly, fun to play. Death animation is a great idea, and I love how cheesy it is. Sometimes you can barely see them die though. It would also be nice if there was a character death animation.
Hey! I really like the idea you have and I thought the paper intro was really charming. If you had the time and skill it might have been really cool if the entire game was in that aesthetic but I understand the limitations.
You really had a good idea here while I can tell the execution is lacking due to lack of experience, you made a really good effort.
A few things I would have changed is having the movement speed of both the player and enemies be way faster. I think currently the movement speed being slow does make the game feel less interactive than it could be. Firing sound for the bow would also be pretty good to have had.
While it does change the game, if I were to make it, I would probably be having a more 'arena-based' level design where enemies spawn in and rush you and you have to connect them to a single outlet before you kill enough of them to proceed. Currently with the current level design the enemies aren't much of a threat
It really does fit the theme well though and your game makes me want to roll with the same concept of connecting enemies together before killing them with a single core thing.
I appreciate the attempt at Juice here. I noticed you wanted to add a dramatic kill feed for each enemy that dies in a chain and I think that's a cool concept. What I'd have done instead is to keep the camera the same but have it so each explosion happens in an ascending, satisfying note sequence (as brought up in this video that generalizes simple Game Juice tricks). I do understand you might have been inspired by games like Fallout and Sniper Elite that pauses the action when an enemy gets killed in a spectacular fashion and it was a nice attempt but I think for a game like this it's better to have something less intrusive in order to keep the flow going (in those games I feel they work better because the killing blows are more rare)
That video also mentions the idea of pausing for a single frame and I think for you game that would work perfectly with the explosion.
Other minor things to consider is that the main menu would benefit if the Start button was highlighted and had a sound if I hovered over it. I do like the ideas behind the music, if you composed it I think you would benefit from a lot more practice. There are some minor things with the music I found annoying which is the main melody being a bit repetitive and the kick drum you used feeling a bit dry. I really enjoy that it's a dynamic soundtrack and I myself haven't really attempted that but it is pretty cool when instruments kick in when enemies draw near.
Death animation would be cool, even just having the guy explode and having a 'Press R to Restart' thing would be better than a sudden restart.
I noticed with the artstyle you were going for it was that 'drawn in mspaint really quick' style which I do appreciate. I do think it might have been cool if the walls and the background were also drawn that way too. You might enjoy this Jam that I also found that is all about the artstyle you were going for: https://itch.io/jam/i-cant-draw-but-want-to-make-a-game-again
Overall I think the idea is fun. Execution needs work but for a first jam this is a good effort and I appreciate the entry. Hope the feedback is helpful :D
Matches the theme wonderfully! I really like that you started off with the pen/paper intro too, that was really unique. I also enjoyed the camera zoom when you showed the robots exploding. I feel like it made it feel more polished. I do agree with Ornelas that saving the zoom in for kills of 2+ would further reward the player for getting combos!
I really liked the theme. A good idea of connecting the robots to the outlets to fry them is very good. Notebook paper notes are especially charming. However, the controls are somewhat locked. The zoom in on the explosions is interesting, but after a while it leaves the action slow, especially if we are trying the same route again. It would be interesting to reserve the zoom for when we explode a certain number of robots at once. In general it is a good job, congratulations!
this is great, really fun. the controls are a bit odd, not sure if you needed four keys. the same movement could have been achieved with 1 button for forward and the mouse pos controls the direction or 2 buttons (forward and backward)i retract the above, having the 4 directions allows full movement and mouse to aim. it was the WASD keys i'm not used to.
but i loved the game and the zoom camera pan when you kill robots it's great. how did you do it?
good work.
I love the level design, and it's very strong on theme! In terms of juice, I like the explosions, but more could have been added re: screen shake, flash, etc. The camera also acts a little strange sometimes. It's pretty punishing to get sent back to the beginning on one hit. Overall a great showing for a first timer!
This is fun! It's extremely original and breaks away from the mindless shooting of other top-down shooter games. Instead, I have to think about where the nearest outlet is before I start shooting. I also like how the robots add to the music when they're activated. I agree with the other commenter that the cutscenes break away from gameplay too much. Also, the graphics are a bit lacking. It would have been cool seeing the whole game in the creative hand-drawn style that was in the intro, but I'm not sure how feasable that would be. And it seemed a little unreasonable for the wire to travel an unlimited length. Overall, this is a really cool idea, and is really fun. With a bit more polish and more levels, you would have a game that I would play often.
