For everyone reading before playing, I suggest playing on easy and going through the whole game.
Spoilers.
I really enjoyed this game. The mood you're able to set with very simple graphics and journal pages is great. I enjoyed the twists (cursed and light sword) and the change in ambience they set. Sound work was especially on point, very nice choice of music, and I liked that only the last ghost makes sound (gives a vibe after finding the lightbringer).
The gameplay was pretty boring. It's basically a walking simulator with a risk of dying if you're very unlucky. I'm very thankful I was able to not die and see the end, it was worth it. I wouldn't have any issues with the gameplay if there was no risk of dying and if the pacing a little faster. I enjoy walking sims especially if the mood is that good. Exploring feels good with the lighting and the increasingly stronger loot to reward exploring. But it dragged on a bit too long and I got afraid of dying and not seeing the end.
With that said I understand how hard it is to balance this kind of thing in such a short amount of time. Overall experience was great, well done !
Edit : I realise "walking simulator" could be a bit harsh, but since there is no strategy for combat and you can't really avoid any fight, the gameplay abstracts to walking forward and hoping you don't see all the ghosts before an healing item.
Thanks for taking the time to play and give such detailed feedback! I'm really happy you got to the end :)
Also, in terms of just walking forward, I understand what you're saying but I would just add for future readers that there's strategy in e.g.:
- timing when to pick up a health
- judging when/where it's safe to explore for items after finding the exit
- using your limited vision to look down corridors and try to avoid getting caught (which sometimes you can't)
So that is where the nonlinearity / decision making comes in, but I get what you're saying :)
I realise I should've phrased it differently, this is only how I felt. Indeed there is some strategy in when to pick healing items, and I didn't know you could avoid fights this way. Ty for clarifying and for the great game :)
Pretty cool game game! It has an eerie vibe that I really like and the effects from the shadow sword were really cool, I was not expecting that!
Nice game, despite the simple graphics I enjoyed the adventure because of the little narration you kept teasing through the pages and the ambiant music and sound effects. The turn-based movement is a really nice mechanic, I like it a lot since it brings a bit of strategic without cutting the pace too much.
Congrats! :)
Played on easy for reference. This was a pretty fun demo! It took me a minute to understand how the mechanics worked together. It was a breeze to get through once I discovered the light bringer sword. I also really enjoyed the effects on that sword and the crazy demon sword (especially the whispering)! Great work on this fun little project!
Keep making games!
Cool. Really liked the lighting effect. The turn-based movement was cool too. I only wished it were easier to disembark from a fight I shouldn't have started.
Thanks for playing and for the feedback :)
