You made a solid vibe, created a chill, relaxing atmosphere that I could definitely see in a 2D game.
For constructive feedback, I do think some of the mix gets a little muddy. Maybe some other parts maybe get a little repetitive, but it was overall pretty good.
Great work!
There's a sort of really nice "crappy but not crappy" lo-fi quality to some of the sounds you used, like for example the strings, that I really liked.
I can agree with a lot of the things Grunt. already pointed out, especially with not having too much stuff in the low end to avoid muddiness.
The muddiness can also easily come from low end building up in the reverb, which you can alleviate by cutting off some low end from the reverb signal.
Good job on these!
This is my Game Jam video submission. I say unfinished because these tracks are part of a much bigger idea that this gamejam has inspired.
This is really an LP. Congrats, you turned the challenge into a well crafted body of work. Overall, everything is unique and the transitions are well thought out. Catharsis alone was like 3 different songs rolled into one. The voice at the beginning was ominous but the human quality is what grabs the attention and the subtle introduction of the violins creates tension where there is familiarity. The percussion moves the piece along to next session like muffled train in the distance to help transition to the introduction of the piano where get our first memorable melody. So much going on with this song alone. Magnificent job.
Ouroboros, monochrome, and roses are red... were a little underwhelming to listen to after being overly stimulated by Catharsis Sound so i would possible arrange that differently. The slow start does not grab attention since the human element of the voice is hidden amongst what sounds like strings so to me this track is perfect when paired with visuals as it is not screaming for attention like catharsis did. A nice compliment.
Yeah, sorry about that, the order of the songs were kinda reversed. I did not properly put it in order when submitting this ;-;
I'm posting a youtube link in the comments here because I didn't in the dashboard and submission.
Thank you for the comment!
Here are my notes as I listen to each:
Catharsis Sound:
I felt that it was a very sold introduction to the submission, and I especially liked how you incorporated a variety of instruments that were able to have a section to shine on their own. My only criticism is that there were some sections where the focus instrument was a couple dB too loud over the rest of the mix, IMO (ex. piano entrance at ~ 3:05). Outside of that, I really enjoyed this piece!
Monochrome:
The arpeggios used behind the melody set a good tone for this piece. The vibe I got from this was sort of a feeling of discovery, like the knight is exploring a new location for the first time and trying to learn everything about it. I thought the melody used in the first half of the piece was complimentary with the instruments behind it. For whatever reason, the piano felt a little out of place for me in the piece. Maybe use the same melody, but on a synth that has some contrasting timbre to those used in the background?
Roses are Red, Beasts are Blue:
To me, something about this piece felt like the introduction of big bad guy. I think it was a combination of the marching beat and the dark melody in the keys. My only criticism here is to be careful of having too many instruments in the low end of the mix as, IMO, it started to get a little difficult to distinguish between some of the instruments.
Chime of the Ouroboros:
This piece feels. like the music that might lead up to the fight with the big bad guy, like something I'd hear out of an old RPG as the player gets closer to the final boss. The similar marching beat as before gives me similar vibes, but the added bells give a sense of the player being summoned to the person ringing them. Excellent!!
Overall, I really enjoyed this submission. Each track fulfilled a purpose and added something to the story being told. I had very few real criticisms while listening to these, and they are more so just my opinion on mixing/arranging.
Thanks a ton for sharing this, and keep up the great work :)
Thank you Grunt for really looking into the work and pointing out actionable improvements for it. It's really the criticism and constructive feedback that I hope to gain from joining OST jams like these. Expressions like these have an art of tuning to making it coherent and masterful. It's through comments like these that help make the foundations of creation. :D
Very dark sounds, I love it!
