How is your game related to the Theme and Special Object?
The game is based off of an Irish myth, involving the characters Lugh and Balor. Apart from the obvious, there are also several nods to the original myth within the gameplay, such as the Blazing Spear upgrade being a reference to the mythlogical Lugh's weapon being either a heated iron rod or a red spear: this way it's both.
Balor's Evil Eye is an important part of the myth, so it happened to work great with the special object. I also used a nazar as the health system: while not part of the Irish myth, nazars are typically intended to ward against the evil eye, and I thought using one would be fitting.

This is a simple but fun game, and I like the short story and art style. The boss fight is not hard but it is exciting to play!
Thank you! I wanted to make the boss a little challenging, but easy enough to beat within a couple of tries. Honestly, I think the hardest part might be the two guards between Balor phases: I'm probably going to lower their movement speed in a future patch to make them a little easier to dodge.
I attempted this game twice. The first time I decided to just skip the cave as I just didn't feel like it, beat the first part of the boss, died on the two enemies above him and gave up after seeing myself back down. The second time I actually went in the cave and got the improved weapon. Unfortunately I died on the second phase and while my camera was on the boss I wasn't on the screen, so I suspect my character respawned at the bottom again. Sadly I did not manage to find my way up blindly. Finally finished it the third attempt, again without the weapon upgrade (I wanted to challenge myself), and the game felt pretty good, I especially liked the simple drawn art style and animations. Btw what version of godot did you use for this?
Thanks for playing! The weapon upgrade is intentionally optional, but the final level is much harder with out it. For reference, the upgrade triples your damage-- kudos for beating the game regardless! Sorry to hear you had some camera bugs, I'll take a look at the code in that section to see if I can get that fixed soon. I used Godot 4.1.1!
This was awesome the gameplay was great, the music was great , the graphics are so cute and there was even a short story. The only thing I could say was there were no sound effects, sounds can bring a lot to a game to further push the story/emotion.
Thank you! I regret not having the time to implement sound effects, I simply ran out of time. If I had a few more hours, my plan was to record sounds of pencil marks, tearing paper, etc. to use, fitting in with the "storybook" aesthetic.
No worries! That sounds like it would have been awesome! Even though the jam is finished you should add that, finish the great game you have started, I would love to see this as a full game!
For sure! I’m planning on doing a post-jam update after voting ends, to add at least sfx and an options menu, plus whatever else comes to mind.
