Layout Tools/Software?

Hey! I'm currently putting together a submission and felt that it would  save your time and ease the load on volunteers if I did the layout myself. I've got a few questions. First, how much creative liberty can be taken with the layout (inserting pictures, colour schemes, and so on) - basically, are we aiming for something relatively subdued or are we going all the way up to MORK BORG? Second, do you have recommendations for appropiate tools to do layout in? I've always just used Google Docs - is that sufficient here? Thanks.

You can go as wild as you would like! Most folks are generally using Affinity or InDesign for layout, which have steep learning curves if you’ve never used them before.

The biggest issue with something like Docs is that it doesn’t do bleed or two page spreads. If you wanted to add bleed, you would need to add 0.13” to the paper size, making it 8.63”x11.13”.

You’d then need the margins to include bleed. You would also need a separate Doc for left and right pages. For the left page, top, bottom, and left margins would need to include the bleed, making them 0.38”, and the right margin would need to subtract the bleed, making it 0.67”. For the right page, it would be the same, but the left and right margins would be swapped.

Thank you for the guidance! I'll see what I can do.

You can always submit something without the layout done. I have some wonderful volunteers lined up because we do want everyone to be able to participate without having to purchase or learn complex software that they might not have used before. Everyone should be able to be a part of this memorial.
