Use of the limitation
Narratively, you sold the government the right to clone your body, so now hundreds of "you" are enemy soldiers. At points in the game, it also becomes clear that your strained relationship with your old friend/almost lover is almost solely because you're being stupid, so you've got to break down your own mental defenses if you want to repair the relationship.
