Hello forum,

The title might be changed. So basically this is my first game jam attempt . The game is going to be about a person who tries OBE for the first times and gets trapped in some shitty place and the main objective is to collect resources in order to escape. Not to collect resources as in minecraft, but more of a tower defence-ish with place for resources. The player must think about defending the base and collecting resources via the machinery. I've come up with some trippy concept, but I'm still thinking on it. Also, in despite of I'm very familiar with Game Maker, I'm gonna use this opportunity to learn Unity. As I said, I have experience with Game Maker, but I did a lot of experiments and in the end there were 0 released games. It's time to get serious now. GameJam is a good opportunity for this.

I really do not know why I'm making a DevLog, but on the forum it says that's a good thing. I will log stuff here for

Day 1 (err, yestarday)

Installed Unity 3d. Wow. Too many buttons and options. I've watched a few videos, read a few tutorials and some pages off the documentation. Seems interesting.

Downloaded the 2d platformer example off the asset store for free. Wondered how to use the project, but the comments in the asset store helped alot. Created this thread in the forum. This seems to be bs! How I'd be sure which value to edit. WTF. Why this happens. Forum people, do not tell me what to do to fix this. Tell me why this occurs. On learning I approach things differently. I'm an engineer.

Do you have any specific questions right now? I use Unity and I'm using the Corgi engine asset for the platformer I'm making for this jam. I'd love to help out if you do have any questions! I know when I started using Unity it was definitely a bit much with all the windows, the inspector, prefabs, etc.

Hey man, thanks a lot. I've got tons of questions. Should I ask them here or via discord? I couldn't manage to find PM's here.

Yeah ask them here! I'm sure other people would love to help out too! Unless you'd prefer my discord, but I'm gonna be away from my pc for an hour or two, sorry about that but when I get back this will be the first post I check out. Hopefully I can help.

But it is appropriate to ask questions here, in the DevLog thread?

It probably depends on how specific the question is haha. If it's directly related to your game I'd say so, if it's more of Unity question you might be right, maybe not. If you want my discord let me know, or you can shoot me an email at edited!

DAY 2

So, I had the chance to experiment with Unity for only about 2-3 hours today. I live in the illusion that I have some kind of social life.

But, now I'm gonna do some kind of checklist for the game (because I saw it some other devlog).

  1. 2d platform engine basics (duh)
  2. Graphics:
    1. Tilesets and scenery stuff
    2. Machinery
    3. Backgrounds
    4. Main hero
    5. Monsters (shitty names for now, gonna change them):
      1. Fiend
      2. Buggy fiend
      3. Spiky
    6. Boss: SkeleSpider-ish thing I guess
    7. Story screen graphics
    8. Golem bro
  3. Sounds & music
  4. Level design
  5. Code the stuff
  6. Cool swooshy effects and particles
  7. I do not know where I'm going with this list
  8. But I'm gonna put some cool particles
  9. Fireworks might be cool
  10. What tf am I doing with my life?

"If everything is done and I have nothing to do" checklist:

  1. Put the Golem dude as purchaseable (summonable/craftable etc, you've got the idea) and it will fight alongside you
  2. Mountain quest - so you'd have to walk away from your base for about 2-3 days and go to the jungle/mountains/deepsea to get some shit or etc
    1. More graphics and tileset wizardry.
  3. Mounts - it is always cool to ride hybrid chickens like chocoboses
  4. Armor.
  5. More than 1 base
  6. More bosses and scary scary skeletons

And I've accomplished 0% of this. I'm so proud.

Hey you made a list! That's a start. For the tile map I can recommend tiled and tiled2Unity for importing it into Unity though I know at some point Unity plans to (maybe already did?) add a tile map editor in for 2d games.

Awesome, thanks Rick.

So I've made some shitty sketches of the SkeleSpider thing on the go. Yea, I've watched Attack on Titan.
