Do we have to use the sprite provided or can 100% of the art assets of the projects be original?

You are not limited to assets provided by us. to reiterate, here are the rules on what can and can not be used in your entry.

Any asset used in the game must be either:

  1. Part of the pre-made assets provided for this jam.
  2. Something you (or someone else in your team) made yourself or commissioned for use in your project within the one-month limit.
  3. Something that you have the right to use and can be used by anyone for free: this includes assets that are public domain, or made under a Creative Commons license (either commercial or non-commercial only), or any other similar license that allows the asset to be used freely.

wait, so if I commision an artist to create sprites for my characters this is not allowed?
(I for now would not create a team but moreso just have myself and pay other people for working on assets)

you can commission an artist, but the work on the sprites must be during the jam period, and not before.
