Old School Fonts

I want to throw out this link. It has some cool old school fonts, some are free for even commercial use. I use Tex Gyre Adventor a lot in my stuff which is free and open source. Keep in mind some of these are not free and are of dubious origin so make sure what you are using is indeed open source and free (unless you pay to use another font in there).

Fonts in that link I know are safe to use:

  • Universalis ADF
  • URW Gothic L
  • Tex Gyre Adventor
  • Tex Gyre Heros
  • URW Nimbus Sans L
  • Liberation Sans
  • EB Garamond
  • URW Palladio L
  • Tex Gyre Pagello
  • Nosferatu
  • Libre Baskerville
  • Baskervald

Edit: Removed pointedly mad as that was free for personal use. Really make sure fonts you use can be used the way you intend to use them.

Always a pain when a font you like is locked behind a commercial license. Birthright's Minister for one.

As alternatives, try FontSquirrel and 1001 Fonts. They're packed with fonts that are free for commercial use, including one of my favorites: Leander. It's a good header font.

I've not used font squirrel. I've used fontspace forever which makes searching for free commercial use fonts easy as well. Thanks for the heads up on that one. Bookmarked.
