Description
In this game, you are I5hma3l. Befriend and then marry a scary alien harpooneer, named Bleepblorp, and go with him on an exciting journey to kill the horrifying space monsters whose heads are full of a valuable substance necessary for the continued life of everyone in the universe. The only other human on board is Captain Ahab, as the rest of the crew hail from every corner of the galaxy. This will be a new experience for someone like you who has never left Earth, but with your strong handsome alien husband Bleepblorp by your side, you know you can face it.

1- call me i5hma3l.mp3: introduction to the game. You're I5hma3l, you're feeling a little depressed and murderous, so you decide to sign up for a dangerous space voyage to keep yourself busy.

2- rooming with the alien (cry).mp3: meeting bleepblorp, the other playable character. if you're going to get any sleep before your voyage, you have to sleep with a complete stranger, who is purportedly a big scary alien. he'll probably kill you.

3- i was scared of the alien but he's snuggly (and now we're married).mp3: bleepblorp is a little alarmed to find a strange human in his bed at first, but you both make the best of it and become inseparable.

4- work is hard and this crew is weird (but we have fun).mp3: once you and bleepblorp sign onto a voyage together, you discover that even though the voyage is leaving from earth, aliens from all over the universe are on the crew. when you all work together, their strange voices fill the space ship.

5- sensors picked up a horrifying space monster (that my alien boyfriend will now fight).mp3: time to fight some space monsters! the player takes over bleepblorp (perhaps also ahab or the other harpooneers) puts on a space suit, and goes out into space to fight the horrifying space monster, and saving life throughout the galaxy. (or perhaps getting revenge!)

If I had more time there would have been a theme for Captain Ahab and some of the other officers and characters, as well as maybe a song at the end where Bleepblorp and I5hma3l finish the voyage and go live happily ever after. (I've never finished Moby Dick, but that's how it ends, right?) As well as game over and victory music.

I started this on Friday, composing all of the material and doing a rough recording. of me playing through it on my grandparents old out of tune piano. I thought I could get a better recording on Saturday, but I ended up not having time, so I had to work with the original.

I decided to embrace the rough sound and sample parts of the recording (piano notes, chords, white noise) to make additional instruments to layer on top to bring out melodies and add some spooky space-ship noise. No digital instruments were used apart from what I sampled. I did use some reverb and delay effects to make things spookier. BUT. I could not mask the fact that it is a terrible recording, or my wrong notes or inconsistent tempo, or the very obvious sound of myself turning a page in the middle of the battle song.

Message from the artist:
please do not listen to this very loudly. i did not have the opportunity to mix it or edit it very well. :) it is not at all clean, but hopefully it will be interesting.

Theme

Panspermia (Πανσπερμία)

How does it fit the theme?
- the sound of "panspermia" made me think of sperm whales and spermacetti, which reminded me of Moby Dick, a book I have started reading but never finished.

i thought about how the theme of "life exists throughout the universe" could apply to this work of literature and decided to set moby dick in space. the pequod is now a space ship. the crew, instead of being from all over the world, is now from all over the universe. they travel far into outer space, to find more life - the horrifying (whale shaped) space monsters... and destroy them.

This is so cool! I love the weird sounds you used, track 4 in particular is very glitchy (sounds like a Beat Repeat in there? Idk if you use Ableton). I'm sure with some more time this would be a really awesome soundtrack. Great work :)

I love the live recorded piano!

Sound of the past in the game from the future... very interesting combination! (and interpretation "panspermia" as "sperm whale" is kinda hillarious :D)

Love honky tonk piano and your retro style, very good job!

the rough recording is really fun x) there’s a ambiance really old and vintage, its cool ! I imagine a old moby dick adventure in 18XX but in space :)

Vertical piano is sounding really great! Could be a library but I believe you recorded it yourself, which makes the soundtrack even more unique. I picture it in some Michel Gondry movie :)
Amazing job, very original!

Always cool to hear someone record their music live! I like how you leaned into the imperfections of the recording, it gave the soundtrack a unique texture. You also took a really cool direction with the theme here.

One thing I'll point out is the battle theme feels like it just fizzles out, rather than coming to a proper conclusion. I'm not sure if that's because of the time limit or not, and I'm not sure how I'd fix that, but it might be something to think about next time.

you're totally right - i wanted high energy for the battle theme but i did not myself have high energy when i was working on it. plus the recording randomly cut out :) so it is a mere echo of the battle theme i imagined.
