Description
My entry for the OST Composing Jam #7! I used the image by @kawaakar and phrase "Inside My World" for inspiration.

The soundtrack:

The 3 tracks I composed for this jam represent a snapshot sampler of what a full OST could look like.

The first two tracks are electronic in nature while the final one is a solo piano piece.

The "game":

Domesea is an (imaginary) 2.5D platformer game where you play as a merfolk who desperately wants to explore the surface world. In this underwater futuristic realm, exploration of the surface world has been forbidden for the last 1000 years.

It up to you to find your way through secret tunnels, radiant rooftops, and overcome nautical nastiness to reach the top!

Who knows what secrets await you on your journey?

Musical background information:

Tracks 1 & 2 composed using several FL Studio VSTs including Flex and FL Keys.

Track 3 was played live on a Yamaha Keyboard and recorded via FL Studio.

The music itself:

Here are a few tracks I composed to give some idea about the audio direction

1. Beautiful Sea Dome (Level 1)

With this track I wanted to capture the essence of wonder for the player. This track uses lots of panned arpeggios to demonstrate movement.

In terms of timbre, I choose to use strings and bell sounds to impart a sense of weightlessness.

This was the first track composed for this jam! In fact, the motifs in this OST all originated from here.

2. I Didn't Sign Up for This! (Boss theme)

Oh no! This theme would play when you encounter one of the 7 security merobots the guard each dome layer exit. The track clocks in at a swift 200bpm, emulating the fast beating heart of the player as they fight for their life against an unfeeling machine.

Many timbre elements are brought over from the previous track including the arpeggios.

If you listen closely to the intro you might hear a familiar melody!

3. fresh air (Ending theme)

After finally defeating all 7 merobots, you have made it out of the dome and onto the surface! Equipped with your land exploring suit, you're ready to search the surface world for it's true history.

This track is a solo piano piece that lets the player know things are calm, for now...

The choice to use piano was made in order to demonstrate a contrast between the electronic sounds of the underwater world and more real sounds of the surface world.

I used a snippet of the melody from "Beautiful Sea Dome" as the basis for this track and created some harmonic movement to accompany it.

After my initial take, I recorded two other ones and that is what you hear panned to each side in the final track!

Message from the artist
Thank you so much for listening to my OST submission! Please feel free to leave a rating.

Looking forward to checking out your submissions!

Theme

Inside my world
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
Three ways I believe my tracks fit the theme:

1. Use of polyrhythms (Inside my world = rhythms within rhythms)

2. Timbres suggestive of underwater including bells and strings/pads

3. They were all composed or recorded inside my home (world)

Love your musicality. Think that's important creating repetition that varies and doesn't feel repetitive, which I really like how you've done. The texture definitely spells water to me, and I think the boss variation is great. Agree with Synlyfe on the outro, great melody.

Thank you!

I agree with you about repetition that varies; I strive to incorporate that in my works.

This was good! Gives me some pseudo N64/PSX era vibes at points, and the instrumentation gels well together across both of the fully arranged tracks. The piano outro is good; a departure from the full accompaniment and an opportunity to unwind.

Developer

Thank you! I greatly enjoy N64 era music so that is a great compliment.
