Description
My entry for the OST Composing Jam #7! I used the image by @kawaakar and phrase "Inside My World" for inspiration.
The soundtrack:
The 3 tracks I composed for this jam represent a snapshot sampler of what a full OST could look like.
The first two tracks are electronic in nature while the final one is a solo piano piece.
The "game":
Domesea is an (imaginary) 2.5D platformer game where you play as a merfolk who desperately wants to explore the surface world. In this underwater futuristic realm, exploration of the surface world has been forbidden for the last 1000 years.
It up to you to find your way through secret tunnels, radiant rooftops, and overcome nautical nastiness to reach the top!
Who knows what secrets await you on your journey?
Musical background information:
Tracks 1 & 2 composed using several FL Studio VSTs including Flex and FL Keys.
Track 3 was played live on a Yamaha Keyboard and recorded via FL Studio.
The music itself:
Here are a few tracks I composed to give some idea about the audio direction
1. Beautiful Sea Dome (Level 1)
With this track I wanted to capture the essence of wonder for the player. This track uses lots of panned arpeggios to demonstrate movement.
In terms of timbre, I choose to use strings and bell sounds to impart a sense of weightlessness.
This was the first track composed for this jam! In fact, the motifs in this OST all originated from here.
2. I Didn't Sign Up for This! (Boss theme)
Oh no! This theme would play when you encounter one of the 7 security merobots the guard each dome layer exit. The track clocks in at a swift 200bpm, emulating the fast beating heart of the player as they fight for their life against an unfeeling machine.
Many timbre elements are brought over from the previous track including the arpeggios.
If you listen closely to the intro you might hear a familiar melody!
3. fresh air (Ending theme)
After finally defeating all 7 merobots, you have made it out of the dome and onto the surface! Equipped with your land exploring suit, you're ready to search the surface world for it's true history.
This track is a solo piano piece that lets the player know things are calm, for now...
The choice to use piano was made in order to demonstrate a contrast between the electronic sounds of the underwater world and more real sounds of the surface world.
I used a snippet of the melody from "Beautiful Sea Dome" as the basis for this track and created some harmonic movement to accompany it.
After my initial take, I recorded two other ones and that is what you hear panned to each side in the final track!
Message from the artist
Thank you so much for listening to my OST submission! Please feel free to leave a rating.
Looking forward to checking out your submissions!
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
Three ways I believe my tracks fit the theme:
1. Use of polyrhythms (Inside my world = rhythms within rhythms)
2. Timbres suggestive of underwater including bells and strings/pads
3. They were all composed or recorded inside my home (world)

Is it fun? Yes! Is it diverse? Yes! Domesea? Forever!
Very nice and bright soundtrack!! Wonderful color choices and rhythms. A very different submission from the rest I've heard.
Beautiful Sea Dome (Level 1) : That background is SICK! I loved it!!!!
Fresh air (Ending theme) : lovely contrast here. And demonstrate your ability to generate different emotions using the same motif.
Great work!!!
Nicely done, Beautiful Sea Dome sounds like it could be in Mario Kart, we can feel the "watery" vibe or what ever concept or water we make of. Fresh air is a nice composition, but I think the piano sound a little "muffled" and really lightly distorted, I don't know if this is what you wanted for a really calm ending track. Good job !
Incredible! The main motif here is extremely beautiful and catchy, I love it!
All the tracks are fantastic in their own way - the first one is so fun and such a bop, the second track is menacing and frantic (yet also a bop!), and the last track is so serene and beautiful (this type of solo piece that's based on a well established motif always has my weak in the knees). The entire ost went straight into my playlist!
I also really liked how you connected each track individually to the theme, that's really unique!
Extra shoutout to you, using a real recording of a piano, which is something I've been personally itching to do since the last jam I've been in.
This is great! Awesome submission!
Great submission with a lot of ideas! Nice piano track to end all that too!
Thank you!
Stylistically there are great ideas here. It fits really nicely with the theme and nice development of your melodic material. You can be more confident with adding more subtle varieties to some of the textures and patterns, as this would just give your tracks that little bit extra. Really great work :)
Thanks!
Great, dreamy sound selection here!
The first track is such a banger, the percussion and bass went so well with the melodies present in the piece. The boss theme had great usage of the leitmotif from the first track which I haven't really seen too often in this jam's entries so it's definitely a characteristic that makes this soundtrack stand out for me. Again, the great pairing of the percussion and bass makes for such a cool track to listen to. Now for the last piece, take everything I said about the leitmotif usage for the second piece and times it by ten. THIS WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PIANO PIECE THAT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE LEITMOTIF SO WELL. I almost teared up as the way this piece was played was so graceful!
Overall, this was a fantastic submission. Keep it up!
Thank you for the kind words!
Beautiful Sea Dome - Surprisingly energetic from the get go. Really enjoyable. I love the arpeggios especially
I Didn't Sign up for this! - I love the edgier sound to this one ! The distorted percussion and synthy, dirty bass are really good and very energetic! I love the the lead melodies, they sound very "floaty" and fits the watery feel as someone else has said.
Fresh air - love the messy feel to this one <3 gorgeous
Thank you! I wanted to have a higher energy on most of the tracks, save for the final one.
Beautiful Sea Dome: The chord and instrumentation choices work so well for this theme. Big PSX vibe.
I Didn't Sign Up For This!: Love the track name. Lots of energy while retaining the watery feel.
fresh air: Beautiful composition. Very expressive piano.
Great work!
Thanks! I appreciate the PSX comparison.
I really like the connection to polyrhythms in the theming. It is so much more engaging when people use orchestration techniques to enhance the theme further than just with the vibes.
I also really liked that this was a much more energetic entry since they are less common from what I have heard.
Great Job!
Thank you!
Love the Shark photo lol, the music is great too! Last one was my fav
Thanks! I took the photo while visiting an aquarium recently. Seemed like an ok fit.
I like this! Great game and story idea, I love it. Very good music also, fits your theme very well! Good work. That piano piece is special man.
Thank you! Glad you like the piano piece.
Funky tunes! I Didn't Sign Up for This! is such a cool boss theme, it's something I would listen to on loop. Also polyrhythms my beloved. Great work!
Wonderful! Shoutouts to polyrhythms
I like your approach to the theme, specifically the idea behind polyrhythms. Everything is high quality, and fresh air is absolutely beautiful and well written and played. I'm saving that one specifically for my loop playlist!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Great stuff! Love the subtle outro
Thank you!
This is a really solid entry! I love the energy in Beautiful Sea Dome and I Didn't Sign Up for This! and I love how you pulled everything back for the Ending Theme, which is extremely well composed.
Very good work!
Thank you! I love a good tone shift at the end when warranted.
Love love LOVE the boss theme! So perfect!!!
Thanks!
This is excellent. Good use of leitmotiff as well. The boss music epic as hell. I'm a JRPG nut, and I can totally hear this when fighting a boss at the end of a dungeon or something. Great job!
I'm glad you liked it!
I tried hard to make sure the the leitmotifs fit in well in each track.
Love the atmosphere you created here. It's somehow calming and energetic at the same time. I'm also getting some Cave Story vibes as well. Superb job!
Thanks! I'll have to check out the Cave Story OST.
I like the vibe!
Thanks!
