Interesting, thanks for sharing. Yea I'd be very happy myself with this!
That makes sense on negative resources, I do like the idea of detrimental events, and 'restart threats'. Maybe something like casting cards could be an interesting way for the player to salvage/prepare for them, in addition to beneficial events. Or event rarity by tiles (I found myself planning around tiles). It is an interesting balancing problem, and I admire the game's achievement on that given the complexity.
I'd love to play more of your games in the future (hope to hear some piano too)!

Polished game! I love the audio! Well-mixed, the music sounds live recorded, and fits the silly + farming vibe well. Boss music or even an extra layer of sound, could've been nice to change up the vibe slightly for the final wave, but it's an excellent track.
The mob's were really cute! And the pixel art helped to sellthe vibe imo. I do feel like with the larve, something like a player health bar would've raised the stakes. Besides the knockback, since they can't damage plants (I think), I didn't feel a strong reward or risk for fighting them.
Love the boss! The animations were very clean, and reminded me of pokemon. Do think enemy summons or physical attacks at health thresholds could've been cool. Also by the last boss, I only had one last plant, so teleporting to remaining plants, could make it more rewarding.
Overall really impressed with this game, it's a solid entry!
Really cool game! I feel this had a clear scope that allowed for many creative cards, and I like the use of events and enemies.
I don't think a full on tutorial is necessary, but I do think indicators might be when starting out; what the numbers mean on cards and tiles, hover pop-ups with names for the resources counters, and how the 'decay health' for different tiles would've been helpful. Kind of explaining the obvious, but once you know that, the UI/UX is very navigable
I enjoyed playing after learning the rules! I started by just using matching cards to tile decay rates. Then rolled many forest tiles, so i could win in 6 turns with mushroom spores hehe ^^' I'd want to play longer to experiment and strategize with other cards. Also figure out nutrient optimization, adapting around events, and when to focus on defense
I don't know whether it was intended to have resources go negative, but that happened depending on what I picked early, which meant for several turns I couldn't move, but might've been a skill issue with resource allocation.
Long post, but overall I'm really impressed with the work, in a short span too. Mostly trying to engage with it as someone who's new to strategy games but wants to learn more. I'm curious how you approached balancing or playstyles when creating this?
Also I don't know if you also did the soundtrack, but it is really relaxing and fits, kinda reminds me of ESO
Such a cute game!! Know you mentioned the AI was unfinished, but everything is feels buttery beyond that. I like the little animations too! I feel like the concept has a lot of potential! I can imagine the strategizing and many fun characters to play as, maybe even operating little catapults and things hehe
Yooooo!! A fellow FusionFall enjoyer?? O.o that's amazing how it's inspired you!
Identity’s such a great point, I hadn’t thought of it that way before. I actually started the track from fragments, so I did feel I could’ve done more with cohesiveness like you said. It’s nice to know the clashing/uncanniness is creating that alien vibe for you. I definitely want to revisit this piece, so I really appreciate the feedback!
Aw! We’ve got to keep spreading the love for it. I have a couple of other tracks on YT if you’re interested! I’ll take every chance I get to write for this game >:)
I see, helpful to know forward motion's resonating so much! And there were def spots I'd add articulations or cut back, so it's helpful to think to approach *around* dynamics and deliberately, now that you say it. Thanks for this, I do want to revisit the piece, so it's giving me some ideas already ^^
Okay 24 hours is impressive, definitely missed that xD! ton of kudos wow. But yea of course, so glad this helped you!! ^^ also glad I could catch some details hehe, def tried to catch some when you mentioned details in the description
Oh and btw, noticed with my third comment I was going to say the harmony moment like at 1:40 may have felt a bit too uplifting for the final boss. I did feel that the other elements like synths/melody were very strong for it, and the chiptune felt like it had deliberate focus in this third track. So I wouldn't think a huge shift would be needed personally, really just a few chord changes there, and the progressions already good though, it's more the fit for me. But anyways, it's great, keep doing more of this stuff :D
The combination of rock and orchestra here is so good!! There's many great idiomatic features that stand out, like
0:00 glitch
0:17 bass solo
1:20, 1:40 breaks sections
2:10 revitalizing intensity (lovely moment!!)
2:50, 3:05 nice outro ideas, callback to earlier parts
The writing translates in all versions, really good job on that!
My only suggestion might be giving instruments more rhythmic freedom at solo opportunities, or rise above the existing track like at 1:30 and 1:50 or 2:50, or separate them from the chords. But the writing is so solid, feel like this gives me a lot to learn. Structure and arrangement especially- very cohesive with appropriate intensity, elements for each section, and naturally varied.
It's nice to see more of your action-oriented work. They silenced you on theme for Alt ost 😭 I'll have to keep waiting for when they ask you to write the animal crossing RPG music >:)
I feel like this has so much to teach about textures, wow!! Some standout moments for me:
0:30 super evocative harmonic shift, especially with the crumbling + bells like church bells hinting at death. Very nice contrast of stable 3-note elements in the background, watching things pass by you as you say. This section feels really nice as if you're just watching things, somehow timelessly for the last couple minuts
1:30 the low end growing before the high end (emotions/feeling come before thoughts/words)
1:40 very cool when vice versa, high comes before low (crying about loss, but knowing you can't do anything about it)
1:50 feels like a last breath
2:00 only high end feels like there's nothing you can do but accept what's happened.
It's interesting the big high/low string contrasting layers come most prominently later in the piece, nearing the end. And background elements take the main focus in the middle, kind of this liminal waiting period. There's so much here that feels like it mirrors the stages of grief. Each layer feels like it serves a purpose, with such an effective ebb and flow. I noticed there were times I would anticipate one to come, only for another to take it's place. Each grabbing for space, like the emotions and thoughts pulling at you. Phenomenal job on that interplay
Not sure why today's the day I write essays on some people's entries xD, but it's so good. I could imagine Jeremy Soule writing this, the musicality, writing, feeling, everything really comes together here
'Lost in Time' The intro reminds me a lot of certain wave music, 'oneheart', super nice! The interplay of higher and lower synths say at 1:40 is very nice, and I like how the melody starts but gets fast. Very nice writing! I did feel the faster elements were a bit subdued with the pads I think. More doubling on ambience or doubling on rhythm might make that choice feel more deliberate, imo at least. Love 2:01 moment! reminds me of nintendo/pokemon while still fitting in the vibe.
'Nuts and Bolts', I like how different textures come in one by one, and compliment each other. The chiptune's so well executed! 0:26 the nasaly + low synth coming in + reverb is an interesting shift. I saw 'muddyness' was mentioned, and I actually like how the reverbed pad almost comes in/out. Aligns with the endless basement of twists and turns, and fears in the foreground and background, kind of getting into your own head, or worrying while running. Playing with more sounds exclusive to the in/out layers might be cool to make it feel even more deliberate, but I feel this would feel very noticable if I were playing a game with this music.
'Spirited' I really enjoyed the ostinatos, and variety of synths, fitting with 'Lost in Time'. The melody played faster up-pitched was immediately recognizable and fit the boss tone. The harmonic shifts start at 1:10 are very nice! It feels almost dreamy and like there's action (spirit) with emotional undertones too. Some of the harmonies say at 1:40 felt a bit
No idea why i made this so long xD, but these were the thoughts/suggestions that came up for me. A lot of great moments here, I feel this is a strong work!
Super pleasant and listenable work! Very clear mix to me and lovely instrumentation. The closest that comes to mind is Avril 14 by Aphex Twin, to me this felt somewhat more uplifting. So homey and delicate too, the guitar instrument near almost sounds like a music box. I think it would fit great around a campfire, with gentle singing or soft instrument over it. Saw your OST Jam submission too, and I enjoyed hearing the sorta warm vibe there too, so accoustics feels like a great new medium to try! Keep working on this, I'll keep an eye out if you ever post the full version!
Wow, I totally get feeling unsatisfied and time limits, but I love this!! It's a very distinct vibe that reminds me a lot of cryoshell, perfect for the dark theme. The sound design and orchestral effects compliment each other very well. Variations to the harmony or a faster rhythm section could be a next direction--love the string ostinatos as is--but the vibe you create with textures/harmonic choices is excellent.
Sound design, 3:30 is so cool! i'd love to hear more moments like that. The effect at the ending too, I could see that evolving into something very intense, maybe heavy metal elements? But yea, keep experimenting!
No yea, that’s totally fair, it is impressive work for the time, especially after reading through the Miro part! You mentioned it’s a new style for you, and definitely seems like a lot of potential. I’d be curious to see where you'd take it.
Umami's does! It’s been years since watching it, so it was nice to be reminded of it through your work! ^^
So so nice! Nice contrast between major and unsettling/mysterious. Sounds somewhat industrial too with the rhythm. Critique-wise maybe more variation to the texture besides pitch, at moments the drums hit, maybe 'scuttling' or quicker lighter sounds if that makes sense. But the vibe's so nice as is, and reminds me of Umami on YT.
