Description
This is an OST for an imaginary adventure game called The Cold Realm Within, created for OSTCompJam #7! Cover art is a public domain image (Zes kerkuilen slapend op besneeuwde takken [1939] by Theo van Hoytema).

The game is a single player adventure game that takes place on a frigid mountain. The main character (you) finds themselves alone in an abandoned village. High upon the peak of the nearby mountain, they see a light emanating from what appears to be some sort of shrine. Staying in the village surely means death through starvation or freezing, so they begin their ascent to the mountain's summit. Along the way, they are descended upon by shadowy creatures that strangely feel all too familiar.

Upon reaching the summit, they encounter an idealized, almost god-like imitation of themselves. The being taunts them, mocks them, and challenges them to stand against it. When defeated, the being is absorbed by the main character, and we learn that the shades were insecurities and manifestations of feelings of failure and unworthiness in the mind of the main character, and the god-like being was the reality of who the MC is - a fine creature only antagonistic to itself. The landscape we trekked through to arrive to this conclusion was nothing more than a representation of our own inner mind - barren of warmth and comfort for oneself.

Message from the artist
This was so much fun! Thank you for doing this!

Theme

Inside my world

How does it fit the theme?
The entirety of the game takes place in the inner world of the protagonist, though they don't realize it until defeating and absorbing the boss. They realize how cold they are to themselves, how their insecurities and fears manifest as dangerous beings hell-bent on attacking them, and how they have an idealized version of how they think they should be, but even then, that version only speaks negatively to itself.

The Cold Realm Within is a good theme for discovering a new world! (Or its presentation in the main menu. In any case, it's cool)

Alone - I'm alone... I am alone in this world... I'm nobody... help... This violin wants to tell me something... But what does she want to say? Am I not alone?

Snow Buried Village is an ancient village. This track is full of carelessness and comfort! I feel like it's safe and very interesting here! Oh, what's in the well?

Footprints in the Drifts - I found a coin in the well... Heh) And now it's time to go higher and higher! Go ahead! To the mountains!

Shades on the Trail - BATTLE! I AM READY TO DESTROY ANYONE WHO STANDS IN THE WAY OF MY ASCENTS!

Failure - R.I.P.

To Claim Oneself - God... why do I so rarely see an organ in this jam? Seriously, it was used by a very small number of composers... Oh, right... IT'S A GREAT TRACK. Professional orchestration that perfectly conveys the emotions of the final battle! I feel the opposition! I feel the dynamics and menace of the environment. The high-pitched chorus seems to be saying to me, "This is the highest bet you can place. Good luck, hero."..

End of Self Discovery - The end. A large-scale, large, great, slightly happy ending.

Overall, you've made one of the most amazing soundtracks of this jam! You have turned out to be incredibly beautiful and exciting! Thank you for an interesting adventure and an unforgettable mountain climb in this jam!

P.S. A very beautiful story! I liked it!

I love how much this submission feels like it could be a legitimate OST. Also the picture lowkey goes so well with communicating the intention and atmosphere? The range of pieces is also great - like the action of Shades on the Trail vs the casualness of Snow Buried Village. Great job!

Thank you so much! I love finding public domain artwork from nearly a hundred years ago that just seems to fit, so I'm glad you appreciated it! :D
