It's a bit unfortunate, yeah.
What I've been doing is uploading a .gif to ezgif, upscaling it 200% to 512x512, then cropping it down as needed (the site lets you do both). You lose a bit of detail around the edge but at least there's no distortion. (378x300, 441x350, and 504x400 should all work for final image sizes)
