the spinning of the three strands is just awesome! they also do a good job of hiding the seam between side and front view of Link. room is also well textured and modeled!

Funny you say that, I started drafting a little write-up on the process. I don't have a recording of my work but I did output a few gifs along the way.

I'm still lost on some of the gifs you posted, it looks like flipped normals from the top down light 

But the edges have a "shimmer" of gray and light blue that I don't follow completely.
Lmk if you ever post that write up or revisit that technique, really great stuff.
