I never would have guessed the original song was only 30 seconds long, the way you extended it felt really natural. Really funky as well :)

Description
- Genre: Funk
- Runtime: 2:02
- My favorite part: Definitely the second half of the track. Even though it's pretty much the same as the first half, I think the small changes that I made to certain parts keep things interesting without being too over the top. Plus, it's just a really funky part in my opinion
- Something new I learned: Sunvox is pretty much a new tracker to me, so this jam was my chance to really dig into it and see what I could do with it. It's really powerful and I'm definitely going to keep exploring it as time goes on. I also learned that making a remix is a very different experience to composing an original song. I thought it would be a little easier since you have a basic idea already, but figuring out how to change that idea into something new while still keeping it recognizable was a fun challenge that definitely took me by surprise.
- DAW used: Sunvox
- Composition Process:
The first thing I did was spend a few days before the jam doing research on 80s funk/boogie music and how it was made way back then. Since the original song is very disco-like, I wanted to go for something that could be played in a roller rink, which brought me to 80s funk/boogie music.
After that, I spent most of the first week of the jam trying to figure out what instruments/samples I could use from Sunvox's available list and from another archive of samples made way back when Sunvox was first being used. While I was doing that, I was also trying out different ideas I had for the intro to the song. This was probably the toughest part of the jam for me as I spent way too much time trying to find/recreate the old school instruments and samples perfectly, which isn't an easy task when you don't have the original gear and are trying to translate it into a program you're not very familiar with.
Once I got a sound palette semi-figured out though, things got quite a bit easier and I was able to start generating ideas and putting them together a lot more smoothly and efficiently. This was when I figured out that extending a 36 second song to 2 minutes is a harder task than it looks, but I think I managed to find a solution to that challenge that I feel good about (even if it is a little cheap lol).
After I had finished the initial draft, I got a bit of feedback from a close friend of mine and did some tweaking of some parts and ironing out of any weird sound issues that were present (mainly from the sax sample that I used, since it has a natural swell to it with a hard cutoff). Once that was done, I did some basic mixing and volume control to make sure the right parts were sticking out when they needed to and that all of the parts weren't too loud/jarring before sending it off to a few more people for a final feedback session.
