Oh wow, is this an original engine? And a first jam game?? Super impressive! I don't have much else to say, good assets and a simple shmup but it seems like quite the technical achievement.
Yeah, is an engine i was working on, since some months ago. This is how i started learning OpenGL stuff, so there may be some code that will look pretty awful too.
I wanted to try and join a game jam for the first time, as it was one of my objectives this year.
And yes, is also the first game i ever made.
Part of this engine is based on some parts of the Seihou engines and some other stuff i was studying by myself.
At least i'm happy this works for more people and not just me.
This experience also gave me a starting point on game making, something i wanted to do some years ago.
"So anyway I started blasting." - Fujiwara No Mokou
So the main feature is the Flamethrower. It's cool but sometimes is doesn't fire while I have the Z key held.
Would have liked to see Mokou's hitbox too.
Anyway game is cute, and the Flamethrower is so funny, Mokou's just obliterating Kaguya with this.
The gameplay was a fairly standard horizontal shmup. It didn't feel like it was worth it to try and use the flamethrower as most of Kaguya's patterns kept you out of range. A hitbox indicator would have been useful though it wasn't hard to figure out the hitbox was Mokou's chest because aimed bullets would go towards it.
The visuals were cute, probably my favorite part of the game.
The sound was all taken from Len'en games, which I'm not sure is allowed. I read JynX's guidelines and it seemed to discourage it, though you could interpret the guidelines as allowing it because they mostly specified not using data from the official games in paid fanworks.
The game was entirely a shmup, so there wasn't much in the way of story or writing to review.
The jam theme doesn't really make an appearance beyond Mokou having infinite lives and the game featuring Mokou and Kaguya.
Just needs a hitbox indicator and it'd be a perfectly serviceable jam shmup, although short and a bit bare-bones, patterning wise. It looks good and controls well, although I didn't find any opportunities to use the flamethrower.
It's not particularly innovative and it's very short, but I had fun. More so than with a lot of the more experimental entries.
