Very cool concept! It's like in real life. If you get too close, you get exposed to emotion, which can hurt :D But if you stay too far away from others, you just fade away!! And yes, if you want to avoid spamming as I did during the stream, a cooldown could work, or maybe an area that was pressed cannot be pressed again. There are solutions, but still, a nice concept!

Fells like nogrid conway’s game of life. Also wish to have score, that depends on difficulty & villagers alive

I really  like the idea and I had fun playing. One small thing I found is that you could spam the mouse button and let them sit in place and  survive for a long period :D, but  other than that good job on the 3 hour game.
