Hard but fun game! I would ask to add a tutorial level instead of a wall of text cause most people will probably not read that, but it was a great game!

Really unique game with a lot of potential! I had a lot of fun trying out different strategies. Two suggestions come to mind. One would be to speed up the battling phase, as it does feel like the units move too slowly. The other suggestion is to make it so that the instructions can be opened from anywhere, since there's a lot of icons and information to memorize.

Developer

Yeah, I maybe should have made some kind of button for speeding up everything. There is an instruction in the screenshots, so you can access it anytime you want, but in the future, I should make tooltip pop up for like everything. Thank you very much for trying it out and the comment :3

This game is right up my alley loved it! And as others have said the art and music were great!

I do feel like speeding everything up just a bit and making the wall of text how to accessible while playing (I found myself reloading the page a couple of times to read it again) will help with getting past that initial onboarding hurdle

And on that note excuse me while I go play another round

Developer

Yeah, I thought the same that everything might be too slow, thanks for confirmation. How to play is always accessible in the last screenshot of the game, so you don't have to reload. And I am glad you liked it and want to play more ^-^

Well now don't I feel silly

+ Quite fun to play
+ Really liked the variety in the characters
+ Art style is cool
+ Sounds and music were good
+ Animations were pretty cool too

- Not sure the game really fit the "There and Back" theme
- It seriously needs a mouse over for each of the many icons and skills and cards etc. I found myself just guessing what most of the things did, but with a little more explanation I reckon it would be a lot more engaging to play

I wanted to implement theme in the story, where you would have to go to certain level, or "depth", and then go back to the surface, while encountering souls of beaten enemies, but as you can see, i couldn't even manage to add proper responsivness or background because of lack of time. Anyway, thanks for playing and the comment

Like others already said. A great game with a lot of potential.
My first idea was similar to yours (and the final game will be in that direction again) but for the few hours I had for the jam, I shifted the idea in a totally other direction xD

Now I know what's missing in my game, and it's definitely throwable chickens. Thanks for playing :3

So to start I think your artstyle is great and the music was really neat too! I think the saxophone was perfect for that. Animations for the characters were super cool and had this semi 3d/2s look. With that said, I had a really hard time figuring out how to play. Is there anyway you could upload a video of you doing a couple battles just to get the game loop?

Developer

First of all, thank you so much for this video, and kind words, It's really insightful to see how person who is not me plays the game. And I am very well aware, that's not juiciest and most user friendly game, but it was first time I made inventory system and UI like that.
You have to right click stuff to move it to your inventory, and generally, when in doubt or something doesn't work, just right click.
That guy with runes is shopkeeper, you will not fight with him, and to sell just drop something on him from your inventory.

There are timestamps, I hope this will remove any concerns about the game play, but if you have any questions, I will be happy to answer ^-^

I struggle to understand the game in the first rounds, but then it was fun. Its a nice concept.

Feel free to check my game

I just started but I have to say that I already LOVE this game. I'm really into games like this (eg TABS and the like), and this is definitely up my alley. I don't really have anything to say about the gameplay other that it's really enjoyable for me and that I'm going to play it again. The only suggestions I have would be to allow the player to put the game on fullscreen, since the UI is kind of small without it, and to show what the rewards do. Other than that, stellar job! If you have the time, I hope you can also play my game!

EDIT : I managed to get to 30 levels(?) but i accidentally clicked a link so now I'm back to 1

Developer

I love that you love it ^-^ Yeah, that was what I was aiming for, random, but simplified battle simulator. Thanks for suggestion, I think it's because i have pretty small screen, so I will keep it in mind for the future :3

I really like this and i feel there's a lot of potential here! The general atmosphere is fantastic between the colours and sound design. Tooltips to help explain things more or show item stats would go a long way I feel. Overall though this is really cool :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks, it's my first time with such a limited palette, so im pretty happy how it turned out. I wanted to make tooltips like for everything, but sadly I didn't manage to do it in time :((

While the game is a bit hard to pick up, i really loved the art style! it was very eye catching and it did not disappoint! as for the balance (its a game jam lol) Really great game overall! Great Work!

It would mean a lot if you could check out my Jam submission if you get the chance. Thanks!

Developer
