From the trailer it looks like an interesting concept, unfortunately I couldn't get it to work on my headset. I spawned into the world but I couldn't move my hands and as others have said already, the UI and everything was behind me which was very awkward.

Are you using an Oculus headset? If so, I didn’t build it to support Oculus, as Facebook is trying to build the metaverse as well. But if you load it up without a headset, you can still use it with a more limited experience (WASD to move, Q and E to turn, shift to jump, but no ability to really move the view much, so typing in the browser window is limited).

Very cool idea and I hope to see this developed more!

If you find some time this weekend, please check out our game “Starship Minis” and leave a comment to let us know what you think! https://itch.io/jam/vr-jam-2021/rate/1145490

Thanks and congrats on completing the jam!!

You bet I’ll keep developing this! There’s a lot more yet to come, stay tuned.

This is a really fascinating concept, sadly I couldn't seem to get it working with my Rift S in either oculus or steam VR. I would only be able to load in without any hands or inputs through steam... strange.

Either way, it sounds like an exciting project so hope you continue on with it!

Hey, sorry about that. I haven’t built it for Oculus devices. Largely because I’m kind of competing directly with Facebook’s own ambitions of building a metaverse, so I figured it probably wasn’t a good idea to build on their platform. But it should work a little in non-VR mode on any Windows machine, but the inputs aren’t as intuitive or fully featured yet compared to VR (WASD to move, Q and E to turn, shift to jump, but no ability to really move the view much, so typing in the browser window is limited). Thanks for the feedback though, let me know if you get a chance to test it out another way (either another VR headset or a limited experience on non-VR)!

Such an interesting concept! It would be cool to know a bit more about how the structures are created, to encourage exerpimentation. It would also be nice if the overall layout of the room didn't require the user to turn around to see the structure.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I’ve actually put together a tool that turns a 3D model file (obj format) into a structured webpage, so that when viewed in The Gridd, it shows the structure! Once I get that tool online so anyone can easily create these web pages, I’ll have an explanation of the algorithm included to encourage experimentation :)

As for the turning around aspect, I see your point. I was going for more of a “surprise!” feel for the player, but maybe I should include something in the UI that encourages the user to turn around (in case it’s their first time in The Gridd). On the other hand, one thing I didn’t make super obvious was that the structure changes as the web page changes (visit a Twitter feed and interact with it to see what I mean); having the web page in the same view as the structure would show how those changes happen simultaneously, which is actually really cool to see.

Thank you for leaving feedback, it’s really motivating for me to see people using it!

By the way, I have more details about the algorithm now, as well as a tool to convert 3D models into web pages for viewing in The Gridd: https://www.gridd.xyz/how-it-works/. Check it out and let me know how it works for you!
