There should be no need restart over, your safe should still work fine, i havent heard any reports of a softlock in that area yet. Maybe i am just misremebering when you get the quest. You should try exploring the southern plains and see if you can find and enter the rabbit burrow.

Thanks for the help! If the entrance to the Southern Plains is past the big bridge and yellow and blue crystals, it won't let me leave. I just get the "I shouldn't leave right now" dialogue (though only on the center. On the side it lets me go up to the edge of the screen, but there's an invisible wall.) I might just start over, which is fine, it's only 40 minutes. Though, admittedly, I don't know how to move saves between versions of RPG Maker games. I tried just booting up the new version but that doesn't seem to have any previous saves in it.
Oh i see, that is indeed strange. Maybe really a save transfer bug then. Very sorry that this happened to you. Will look into it. You didnt choose the option to skip the town tour by any chance? That options was a little bit bug in that version.
Its a bit annoying but doable. There is a folder called "www" and in that is a folder called "saves" just copy that folder over to the new version in the same dictonary and you should be fine.
If the saves dont show up there is also a way to fix that. Making a new save and once it is created replace it with the old one.
