It was a bit difficult to play until I realized that it is much easier and more enjoyable with a mouse

I 100% agree. Gamepad/Joystick/WASD was added, but I was not entirely sure how to normalise it with the mouse controls. There is a sensitivity slider in the settings, which can help a bit but not enough. It was designed and developed for use with the mouse from the beginning, so that is the best way to play!
