I put the ladle thing in the bowl and then turned on the water. Seems that was a bad idea, as I could do nothing to it afterwards. Maybe I should have filled the sink and then put it in.

You did the right thing with putting the guksi (Sámi wooden cup) in the sink, it shouldn't matter if you do it before or after filling the sink with water, as the purpose was just to clean off the dust off to reveal the symbols on the handle.
