The game is a bit unclear, but all you needed to do was to unveil the symbols on the cup so that the corresponding part of the letter would be translated.

For the letter, if you press the L key while in the game you can look at the letter whenever you want to. It should update after you complete a puzzle that reveals the related symbols within the letter.
We will try to improve the door opening and the ending in the future. Unfortunately the ending had to be a bit rushed, so it's some very valid feedback.

You did the right thing with putting the guksi (Sámi wooden cup) in the sink, it shouldn't matter if you do it before or after filling the sink with water, as the purpose was just to clean off the dust off to reveal the symbols on the handle.
