We originally thought about the movement in a 3D space but down scaled it to 2D for simplification.
I agree that the actions should have more feedback - we actually have in the game resources visual and SFX effects for such things, but we didn't managed to implement it in time.
There is actually one big feature that broke with the last build and that is the key blow out over time so you play area becomes more and more limited.
