With 17.6.6 (current stable) I'm able to launch the app, pick a remembered profile and launch a game — which version are you currently running?
Hmm... I thought it was as up-to-date as possible, but I'll double-check when I get home (what's the quickest way to determine that?)
And if it happens again I'll screencap the error.

Right now, press 'Alt', it'll make the menu appear, version number is under 'Help'.
